Al Smith criticized Roosevelt was his old friend Al Smith who suggested the New Deal had communist overtones, but ironically, Communist Party leader Earl Browder claimed Roosevelt was part of a capitalist conspiracy. And as the 1936 campaign got underway, Roosevelt's opponents were hard-pressed to find issues with popular appeal.
