Publisher: Hansib Publications
Established in 1970 by Arif Ali, Hansib Publications was one of the first publishing houses that catered to the West Indian community. It initially published magazines and journals but began publishing books as well in the late 1980’s, growing to be the largest Black publisher in Europe. This collection includes contemporary and historic publications from Hansib.
People: Writings of George Padmore
George Padmore was a Pan-Africanist and writer born in Trinidad. From 1934 to 1959, Padmore lived in London where he surrounded himself with like-minded writers such as C. L. R. James. Included in this collection are digitized versions of Padmore’s out-of-print writings.
Event: Construction of the Panama Canal
The migration of workers of African descent from the West Indies and America to work on the Panama Canal around the turn of the century was one of the largest international migrations post-emancipation. This collection includes government documents, court documents, and organizational papers from the national archives in the United Kingdom and United States that relate to the experiences of African Americans and West Indians as they migrated to the Panama Canal and developed communities as workers on the Canal.
