Dreamer's Waltz
performed by Scott Nygaard, 1955- (Rounder Records, 1996), 51 mins
1996's Dreamer's Waltz is Scott Nygaard's second solo release. These songs are vibrant with fiddle and guitar, the heartfully played. "Icewater" has the traditional bluegrass style, as does the fast-paced instrumental number "Crockett's Honeymoon," and there's an old-timey sound on "Evening Shade." "Mind the Gap"...

"Icewater" has the traditional bluegrass style, as does the fast-paced instrumental number "Crockett's Honeymoon," and there's an old-timey sound on "Evening Shade." "Mind the Gap" is also noteworthy for its skillful banjo. Nygaard is particularly effective on his own original modern compositions, like the lucid "Derwent Vale" and the cheerfully uptempo "Beaten to the Puncheon," which will surely have listeners reaching for repeat play. Recommended for bluegrass fans, both progressive and traditional, as it has a nice mix of each. ~ Murrday Fisher, All Music Guide

Seeing Things
performed by Laurie Lewis (Rounder Records, 1998), 48 mins
While previous albums have explored Lewis' prodigious fiddle talents and her ability to put a new spin on bluegrass music, Seeing Things zeroes in on her glorious voice and her ability to tell a story with it. Eight of the 11 tunes come from her pen; tunes like "The Refugee," "Kiss Me Before I Die," "Angel On His...

While previous albums have explored Lewis' prodigious fiddle talents and her ability to put a new spin on bluegrass music, Seeing Things zeroes in on her glorious voice and her ability to tell a story with it. Eight of the 11 tunes come from her pen; tunes like "The Refugee," "Kiss Me Before I Die," "Angel On His Shoulder," and "Bane and Balm" all show tremendous growth as a writer, while the opening "Blues Days, Sleepless Nights" bears strong comparison to her best bluegrass work. Tom Russel's "Manzanar" (the story of a World War II Japanese POW), her duet with Cris Williamson on "Let the Bird Go Free" and the traditional "The Blackest Crow" set moods bleak, somber and ethereal. But mostly it comes down to Lewis' voice, an instrument of uncommon beauty, depth and versatility. This is one special album. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide
