Progressive Bluegrass, Vol. 3
(Folkways Records, 1965), 43 mins
Of banjo innovator Roger Sprung, Alan Lomax wrote, "Bluegrass emerged fifty years after New Orleans' hot music as mountaineers' answer to jazz. It seems to me that Sprung has taken a logical and exciting step...by tastefully adding jazz instruments to the bluegrass ensemble and giving bluegrass an exciting swing....

Seeing Things
performed by Laurie Lewis (Rounder Records, 1998), 48 mins
While previous albums have explored Lewis' prodigious fiddle talents and her ability to put a new spin on bluegrass music, Seeing Things zeroes in on her glorious voice and her ability to tell a story with it. Eight of the 11 tunes come from her pen; tunes like "The Refugee," "Kiss Me Before I Die," "Angel On His...

While previous albums have explored Lewis' prodigious fiddle talents and her ability to put a new spin on bluegrass music, Seeing Things zeroes in on her glorious voice and her ability to tell a story with it. Eight of the 11 tunes come from her pen; tunes like "The Refugee," "Kiss Me Before I Die," "Angel On His Shoulder," and "Bane and Balm" all show tremendous growth as a writer, while the opening "Blues Days, Sleepless Nights" bears strong comparison to her best bluegrass work. Tom Russel's "Manzanar" (the story of a World War II Japanese POW), her duet with Cris Williamson on "Let the Bird Go Free" and the traditional "The Blackest Crow" set moods bleak, somber and ethereal. But mostly it comes down to Lewis' voice, an instrument of uncommon beauty, depth and versatility. This is one special album. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide

Progressive Bluegrass and Other Instrumentals - Vol. 1
(Folkways Records, 1963), 35 mins
Known as "The Father of East Coast Bluegrass," Roger Sprung was born in Manhattan in 1930. The variety of music he encountered in New York informs his banjo playing as he incorporates jazz, old time dance tunes, and the syncopations of Civil War-era fingerpicking. Doc Watson accompanies him on this album.

Let The Rough Side Drag
