While the Waiapi of Brazil used to roam freely, the discovery of gold in their territory caused outsiders to come in and disturb the environment. The Waiapi were willing to share their land, but they desired specific areas to be set aside for themselves only. Thus demarcation efforts - which took 11 years - began.
