Modern day Taiwan is in many ways a reflection of ancient China, preserving the cultural legacy of the world’s oldest existing civilisation. While post-war mainland China went through its revolutionary turmoil, setting aside most of its traditions in the process, Taiwan chose to preserve them. The island has become one of the last havens of the sophisticated and secular Chinese lifestyle. THE DRAGON LEGACY brings to light some of these enduring traditions in art. It offers insight on how calligraphy, painting and opera have become highly refined as art forms over the centuries. This film also explores Chinese philosophy and religion, from Confucius to Taoism, as it is still being practiced. In present day Taiwan as in ancient China, daily life and the afterlife, the past and the present, are all inextricably linked. THE DRAGON LEGACY is an immersion into the past of the fascinating and complex Chinese civilisation.

This impressive modern museum, visited by 2 million people every year, tells the story of Mexico from before the Aztec civilization to the Spanish conquest. In this episode, a chemical engineer and some Mexican athletes help us discover whether the rubber ball used on the ancient Aztec playing field contained a human skull. We dive into a watery cave to discover the Mayan path to the afterlife, and then investigate the power of a crystal skull to reveal the secrets of the dead. We pilot an ancient canoe through Aztec canals to discover why modern Mexico City is sinking, and then discover how a valiant gladiator defeated a score of Aztec warriors armed with the world’s sharpest swords. And finally, we discover how a dress worn by the most notorious woman in Mexican history led to a massacre that changed history.

At the dawn of history an entire civilization gathered to build the most magnificent monuments on earth but why and what drove them to it? Challenging the suggestion that 'tombs are for dead pharaohs', author Robert Bauval, Alexandria engineer and renowned expert on ancient Egypt, has contested the world of Egyptology and led it in new directions. This intriguing film reveals the key to ancient Egypt's great pyramids and temples in a magical 'grand unified plan' that was written in the stars. Bauval's investigation in the secrets of ancient kings and priests is a major breakthrough in this line of historical research and shows, using the latest astronomy computer software and the latest archaeological and Egyptological findings, that the whole landscape of ancient Egypt with all its major pyramid sites, sun-temples and religious centres was developed in accordance to an ambitious long-term plan to turn Egypt into a 'Celestial Kingdom' where time would cyclically recur and the cosmic order obeyed. It leads him to a daring proposal about the core of ancient Egypt's being regarding the time it began in what the Egyptians called the 'time of the gods.' This, Bauval proposes will again draw worldwide attention and, without doubt, be hotly debated for years to come.
