Suwisal is a successful, middle-aged company director, but he has a melancholic personality and is very forgetful. His beautiful young fiance finds herself having to remind him of daily appointments, special occasions and routine things. Suwisal is a reluctant husband-to-be. He has casual relationships with other women and appears to be troubled by something deep in his psyche- something he tries to forget in order to maintain emotional stability. This stability is suddenly upset when he is called to serve on a jury at a murder trial. The defendant is a young sex worker accused of murdering a client. Suwisal recognizes her as Piyum, the young servant from his aunt's house, whom he knew twenty-five years ago. He had a sexual encounter with her and she became pregnant. But refused to see her again and help her through her difficulties. Suwisal is not sure if Piyum recognizes him. She says nothing. He is advised to remain in the jury and he votes with the majority to find her guilty as charged. She is sentenced to ten years imprisonment. But we see that it is Suwisal who has been sentenced to a lifetime of guilt, remorse and despair. He now feels he should share some responsibility for the life Piyum was forced to lead. He tries to lodge an appeal on her behalf but he is advised of consequences if his past becomes public knowledge. Suwisal persists, he visits Piyum in prison and offers her help. A rare look at the vibrant subculture of Jakarta’s street buskers, JALANAN offers fascinating and occasionally heartbreaking insight into Indonesian urban life. Director-producer-cinematographer Daniel Ziv captures the beauty and risks of street life as charismatic buskers Titi, Ho and Boni struggle to make a living. He follows them as they play beautiful music on buses, in markets and on the streets. Personal struggles such as imprisonment, domestic violence, floods and family illness round out the lives of the musicians. We are also invited to the rural mountains to visit Titi’s family, which proves a poignant counterpart to the rush of the city. The film gives voice and exposure to the lives of Jakarta’s street buskers, and allows us to follow them out of the bus and into their homes. Ziv’s fearless exploration of this subculture is beautifully crafted, interweaving the three stories over several years as they find love, seek education and work to improve their lives. JALANAN is a captivating and ultimately unforgettable documentation of oral culture and marginalized urban lives.

JALANAN (‘Streetside’) tells the captivating story of Boni, Ho & Titi, three gifted, charismatic street musicians in Jakarta over a tumultuous 5-year period in their own lives and that of Indonesia. The film follows the young marginalized musicians and their never before seen sub-culture, while also painting a striking, moody and intimate portrait of Indonesia’s frenzied capital city. Using the powerful soundtrack of the musicians’ original compositions to drive the film, it traces their elusive quest for identity and love in the day-to-day of a city overrun by the effects of globalization and corruption.

Seemingly voyeuristic in its approach, Motel Cactus is a steamy narrative of people's lives and relationships, all of which takes place in a single, seedy motel room in Seoul. The film consists of four separate stories that illuminate the complexity of the human condition. In the first encounter Choi chooses to spend her birthday with her boyfriend Lee Min-Koo at the motel, because it is the only place she feels entirely secure with him. Next, film student Sung Joon-Ki rents the room to shoot a scene for his filmmaking project, but while waiting for the cameraman to show up he and the actress become physically intimate. In the third story an older couple, Kim Suk-Tae and Choi Hyun-Joo, heavily intoxicated after drinking at a bar, use the room for a one night stand. Finally, a recent divorcee rents the room to reconnect with her old flame. The four stages of romantic relationships presented in this first film by Park Ki-yong provide an original look at modern sexual loneliness and desire. Movie trivia - Shot by Chris Doyle, look out for a linking shot of a prop that shows up in Wong Kar Wai's Happy Together, which Doyle was also shooting at the time. Awards/Festivals: New Currents Award Pusan International Film Festival 1997; FIPRESCI Prize - Special Mention and Nominated Tiger Award Rotterdam International Film Festival 1998; Singapore International Film Festival 1998.

He settles down with his youngest son and soon realizes that without his wealth he is nobody. His sons treat him like a burden; his grandchildren laugh at him. He feels completely detached from his family and decides to cut his ties forever. The point the film is trying to make is that old age is like a bale of thawed cotton, apparently weightless. But the passage of time (age) makes this bale more and more wet, and it soon becomes so heavy that everyone wants to throw it off. The strongest point of this film, a first feature by an active writer, is the performance of Pankaj Kapur in the leading role
