Dr. Dipankar spends his days treating patients at a government hospital, and his nights working on a leprosy vaccine in his home laboratory. Straining both his health and his relationship with his wife, he finally brings his work to fruition. However, his achievements are immediately mired in controversy as his professional peers question the methods of his experiments and subsequent findings. The Department of Health, angry with Dr. Dipankar for having released the news to the press without their approval, too refuses to recognize his research and goes further to transfer him to a village clinic. And when the John Anderson Foundation in Britain invites Dr. Dipankar to submit his papers to them, the Director of Health makes sure that the letter gets lost in a pile of paperwork. Strapped of time, Dr. Dipankar is unable to finish documenting his research and before he is able to do so, news breaks that two American scientists have already found a vaccine for leprosy. This film is based on the life and suicide of Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhyay, the first Indian doctor to create a test tube baby. The film is a social tragedy born out of the gradual transformation of feudalism into capitalism. It concerns the predicament of the protagonist Jasgir, who becomes the victim of the exploiter's tendencies of the young landlord. His father was treated kindly by the elder landlord, but the son Bhanta tries to retrieve all of what his father had given to Jagsir. Against the background of this external oppression, Jagsir is also deprived of normal life because he belongs to a low caste and cannot marry from among his own people as his parents' marriage was not acceptable to his maternal grandparents, who discarded his mother. Jagsir is thus condemned to live and die without a child who will light a lamp at his tomb. Jagsir however falls in love with his friend's wife Bhani. Does love hold any promise for the future, or is Jagsir to drag his life to death and become extinct without anybody to light his tomb?

In 1936 Colonial India, Jane Beatty moves to Trippuvur to work for Mabel Forster, a missionary determined to make a difference and save young local girls from being sold to the temple for prostitution. When Jane purchases a girl to save her from such a fate, she brings the mission into a head-on conflict with Kamla Devi, a senior temple woman. Jane is then forced to smuggle the girl out of Trippuvur and put her up for adoption in the city. However, when Jane realizes that adopted children get sent back to the mission when their British foster parents move home to England, she is unwilling to leave the girl to such a fate. Thus, Jane Beatty makes her first adoption. However, being a single parent to Indian and Eurasian children proves to be challenging in a racially discriminating society. American doctor Alan Chandler helps her out along the way, becoming her confidante, but big changes are ahead as the beginnings of the Second World War start to brew. One of two feuding Mohammedan cousins living in Britain but of Indian origin seek the assistance of an Indian Barrister to travel to Britain and settle their matter in a court of law. The Barrister travels to Britain, and finds that all Asians are treated as coolies, and their status is worse than of servants. Despite of being dressed in a suit and a tie, he is thrown out of a first class train compartment; is asked to remove his cap in a court of law; asked to ride with the driver of the coach; and even shoved out on the footpath for daring to walk close to a bureaucrat's premises; beaten, and abused with no recourse to any justice. His attempts to grieve these issues is met with strong governmental and bureauctatic disapproval and opposition. Notwithstanding this, he settles the dispute between the two cousins out of court, and sets about trying to organize the local Asians to assert their rights, and even represents some of them in Court. Then he journeys to Durban, South Africa, where yet another struggle is taking place against the native Africans and the emigrant Asian community. This is where this young man summons his wife, and three children, and this is where he decides to garner support of the oppressed community to improve the lot of all people, and this is where he will find that though the laws are on his side - the people who interpret them, and legislators are opposed to any kind of fair or equal treatment that this young Barrister was asking for. The young Barrister will then re-locate to India to continue his struggle against the British - and he will soon be known and acknowledged by the world as -- Mahatma Gandhi.

Sanichari lives alone in a village in Rajasthan, India, working as a bonded laborer. One day, Bhikni, a rudali (professional mourner) comes to stay with Sanichari prior to the death of the local landlord and Sanichari relates her life of miseries to her -- born into a lower caste, Sanichari's father had died shortly after her birth and then her mother had abandoned her to join a traveling performance troupe. However, through all of her misfortunes, her husband's death and the departure of her only son, Sanichari had never shed a tear, with her heart hardened to the harshness of life. Bhikni tries to change that for her by encouraging her to become a rudali, a profession that would give her the money and respect that has so far been out of her reach. Through an unexpected twist of events, Sanichari is transformed.
