Set against the backdrop of political unease resulting from the 1947 partition of British India into the Republic of India (Hindu) and the Dominion of Pakistan (Muslim), Kantatar follows the journey of Sudha (Sreelekha Mitra), an illegal immigrant who is forced to rely on a series of men in order to avoid poverty and starvation. During her latest search for a place of refuge, she forms a romantic attachment to Binod (Sudip Mukherjee), an introspective weatherman whose job it is to monitor the direction of the wind. Having changed her identity and religion (from Hindu to Muslim and vice versa) with each man she meets, Sudha's secret begins to unravel when a rural lawyer discovers she is an illegal immigrant and threatens to report her to the authorities as a possible terrorist. Realizing that she must once again uproot herself to avoid imprisonment, Sudha relays to Binod the story of her many trials and tribulations. Kantatar is a powerful narrative of love, loss, and the steps one woman must take in order to survive the geopolitical realities that impact her life. Flowers of the sky represents the effects of economic and cultural globalization on Sri Lankan society, dealing with such issues as HIV, homosexuality and the status of women. The center of the film is Rani, an actress who has been forgotten by the society that once idolized her. She rents out rooms to couples who want a discreet love nest. When one of these trysts is discovered, she is forced to confront her own scandalous past. Rani is played by Sri Lanka's most famous actress, Malini Fonseka, who is also the director's sister-in-law. The portrait of a film star who also acts in TV dramas is somewhat autobiographical. The movie was a critical and popular triumph in Sri Lanka and on the festival circuit, winning honors for Fonseka's performance (Silver Peacock Award, India International Film Festival, Goa) Vithanage's direction (special Jury Award, 15th Festival International des d'Asie in Vesoul in France), and best film (NETPAC award for Best Asian Film at the third Cines del Sur Festival in Granada, Spain).

The film illustrates the love and devotion a mother has for her son and daughter even though the violence of war destroys their dreams. As Iranians celebrate the New Year, Iraqi bombs rain down on Tehran in 1988. We meet the widowed Gilaneh and her pregnant daughter who are in search of the daughter's husband who has deserted his military post. As the inhabitants of Tehran are fleeing the bomb ridden city, Gilaneh and her daughter make the perilous journey into the capital city to find the missing husband. Fifteen years later, the United States attacks Baghdad during another New Year's celebration. Scenes of the new war -- in which Iraq is now the invaded -- flash insistently across the television while Gilaneh tries to rebuild her hopes and dreams for her children whose lives have been shattered by violence. This filmic offering by acclaimed director Prasanna Vithanage (Walls Within and Death on a Full Moon Day) is a poignant narrative of human displacement against the backdrop of the bitter, real-life conflict between the Sinhalese and Tamil people of Sri Lanka. The film traces the experience of three individuals, each of whom is affected by the war in different ways. Chamari enlists the aid of a London-based journalist to help locate her husband, a pilot who was captured by the Tamil Tigers; a young Muslim boy Arfath tries to keep his dog, even as his family joins thousands of other Muslims in a mass exodus to escape the conflict; and Dumida, a lonely young soldier, discovers that his sister has been working as a prostitute in a brothel that serves both Sinhalese and Tamil soldiers. All of these events, presented from a Sinhalese perspective, take place under the searing heat of a hot August sun and the weight of lengthy civil war. Awards/Festivals: Grand Jury Prize and nominated Lino Brocka Award Cinemanila International Film Festival 2003; Grand Prix des Amriques Montreal World Film Festival 2003; FIPRESCI/NETPAC Award Singapore International Film Festival 2004; Amiens International Film Festival 2003; International Film Festival Rotterdam 2004; Deauville Asian Film Festival 2004.

Made in China tells one of the millions of stories of migrants from rural China who comprise the backbone of the Chinese economic miracle. It provides a human face behind the ubiquitous label "Made in China". This massive dislocation of people may well represent the largest, most rapid migration in human history. The film demonstrates how one generation of Chinese is experiencing the culture shock of an Industrial Revolution which took centuries in the West. It is inevitably both an elegy for a lost way of life and a grassroots view of what could become the most powerful economic power on earth.
