'Like a Desperado Under the Eaves' was originally produced for the 2003 Jeonju Digital Project, which invites submissions by "passionate filmmakers who are competitively searching for the cinematic language at the very edge of film production." Says director Aoyama Shinji: "When I was asked to produce this film, I wanted to freely draw a picture of my lethargic self when I was in the mid-twenties, drinking and cursing at the world, and without a job. I also depict the stories that happened around me at the time." Some of these stories include a mysterious girlfriend who loans him money and shares his manuscripts with the world, a neighbor who is continually chanting and playing the drum, and a middle-aged man who screams in pain and who wants to be thrown out of the building. Akihiko, one of Aoyama's recurring characters from the director's Kitakyushu trilogy, writes and plays songs with a friend, but is too shy (or lethargic!) to play them in public, only watching while his friend performs. Aoyama presents a vivid picture of Japanese youth estranged from salaryman society.

The film attempts to show how the people who choose shizenso rather than typical family grave try to accept one’s death. Shizenso means a natural mortuary practice that has no religious affiliation. It scatters cremation ashes of the deceased in the ocean and mountains. During the 1990s in Japan, shizenso emerged as a citizen movement due to the changes in social attitudes towards family and religion. The film recounts stories of members from Grave-Free-Promotion Society (GFPS) who practice shizenso. It explores not only this unique practice of departing one’s beloved ones but also the mixed emotions of those who practice it.

Inabe is in between. By night he walks; by day he waits. He lives with his girlfriend in a small, cluttered apartment where care and affection are not overt but easily detected. Fired for theft, Inabe is not in a hurry to find a new job. Harboring a desire to be a poet, he feels inspired when he meets a published poet and decides to enter a poetry contest. He has no money, so when a friend tells him about a hospital that is paying a lot of money to inject human subjects with experimental medicine, Inabe responds with interest. He takes the 'job,' buys himself new clothes and flowers for Amano, and happily asserts to a friend that he is now the breadwinner. Filled with pride, Inabe asks Amano what she would do if she had a lot of money. She says she wants to see Taiwan, while he says he wants to eat delicious food. When Inabe hears from a friend that the man who told him of the experimental injection has died, his life and relationship take a sudden turn.
