When 'Shakespeare Must Die', a Thai film adaptation of 'Macbeth', that supreme song of tyranny, is banned by the Thai government for reasons of national security, producer Manit Sriwanichpoom treks through the corridors of power to unban his Shakespearean horror movie; from the Cultural Ministry, that had funded and then banned his film, to the Senate and the Human Rights Commission, all the way to the Administrative Court where he is suing the government for abuse of power. Wherever he went, amidst political upheaval in a land of fear, a camera followed him, into secret places long hidden from the sun, where witnesses are not welcome. The resulting cinema verite is the living story of a struggle for justice and human dignity, for the fundamental right to freedom of expression, which Thai filmmakers do not have.

Two rival coconut growers compete for full ownership of a Thai plantation on the island of Samui, pitting one grower's son against the other grower's daughter. The goal is to destroy the competition's business so that the entire island becomes the victor's prize. The winner will be determined by how successful each is in the business of coconut crops. The rules are simple: if the son wins, the girl must marry him, but if the girl wins, the son must give his business to her. It is a match of wits in which trickery and deceit are the main weapons. Music and song keep the story light, despite the pair's determination. However, falling in love stirs the pot of luck and skill. But love does not conquer all, for betrayal is fair game. In the battle for Paradise Island, love will have to take a back seat unless true confession and forgiveness emerge to turn this nasty game around.

When young human rights activist Supinya Klangnarong commented in 2004 that the ownership of Thailand's largest telecommunications corporation by Thaksin, the prime minister, constituted a conflict of interest, she was immediately sued for 400 million baht by the corporation, and her life was no longer her own. One of Thailand's independent female film directors, Pimpaka Towira, met her at a seminar where they were the only two women, and became curious about the personal consequences of her political involvement. Says Pimpaka: 'Her story makes me think that it could happen to anybody. In Supinya's case, it's getting complicated because, for her supporters, she came to represent the fight for freedom - in a way she was used by them - and for her enemies she was like a pawn to teach a lesson to those who dared challenge the power - and that means she was being used by them, too.' The most memorable characters in the documentary are Supinya's parents. Her mother says that people ask her if she is proud of her daughter, but she says she is mostly worried. Historical events took over in Thailand, and gave the film an unexpected ending, and we are not yet sure if it is happy or sad.

They are drawn to each other, but it is she who woos him as a lover. The two begin an illicit affair that even Master Papo's main assistant notices, as well as the helpers in Master Papo's home. Sangmong and Yupadee confess undying love for each other and a desire to be together forever. When the two are discovered by Papo in their love hideaway, the old man 'grants' their wish and handcuffs them together to teach them a lesson. Papo refuses to release them, wanting to carry out the full measure of his plan to punish them. But things turn ugly and then tragic when all lose their endurance and patience, when forgiveness is impossible. This film was shot by legendary Thai director Ratana Pestonjee.

When a young man returns to Bangkok, his hometown, after finishing college, his miserly uncle expects to put him to work collecting interest on loans made to the poor. Tu rejects this job, saying he wants to help them get out from under the burden of debt and that he is going to do it by putting their musical talent to work for themselves. Money is the root of everything, or so a song in the film goes. And indeed money is everything in this film. With multiple storylines converging and convoluting the film's plot, Tu's uncle's plan to ruin his nephew takes front and center. But the musical lives and fortunes of Tu and his friends never takes a back seat to that plot, because in the end money, money, money becomes a matter of fate that can't be denied.

8 moving vignettes reveal vivid contrasts of 21st-century life among farmers/herders in Thailand's northern mountains. Profound continuities of age-old traditions are countered by scattered but crucial technological benefits -- telephones, tin roofs, the car leading a Buddhist procession through rice fields, the rifle an old man uses to scare intruders. Cattle-rustlers on motorcycles interrupt agricultural methods thousands of years old, but the loneliness of the elderly is punctuated by phone calls with city relatives. They share dependence upon nature, each other (and pets), but their temperaments vary: from the lone farmer pondering the sky with his dog, to a merry group of bicycling musicians visiting a temple. The vignettes, accompanied by the sounds of rain, threshing, and local musicians, are intercut with visually poetic takes focusing on timeless satisfactions: clouds, mountains, waving grain, the full moon under which children tell ghost stories inspired by the mysteries of birth and unexpected death. Awards/Festivals: Vienna International Film Festival 2006; Munich Film Festival 2007.

Two families are employed by a landowner to work on his rice fields. One of them, used to own their own land, but was evicted for being unable to keep up with his hefty loan payments. In the absence of machinery, they plant rice using traditional farming methods and an untrained buffalo. However, the low market prices for rice mean that they have to supplement their income with picking wild mushrooms. They also eat wild frogs, snakes and honeycomb when their income proves to be too meagre to feed the family. In contrast, a neighboring farmer, a retired teacher, farms his land organically and hopes to keep the land fertile with the rice stalks, so that he will always be able to grow food for himself. Thai director Uruphong Raksasad had grown up in the same village where the film is beautifully shot, and had chosen to use local farmers as his actors. The camera follows the film crew and actors through the jungle, revealing behind-the-scenes activities such as the setting up and dismantling of scenes at different locations, as well as the actors going through various 'takes.' Though seemingly fragmented, Worldly Desires is organized around scenes shot during the day, and a rather quirky musical number that was shot at night. From the Jeonju International Film Festival.

A karmic lesson is illustrated by the lives of two people who get entangled in a web of crime. One of them knowingly gets involved, the other unknowingly. And the consequences get played out as karmic justice awaits its time. Thom works for a nightclub owner who cannot pay his back rent to an owner who is pressuring him. Thom's friend Prae, who is a widow and mother of an infant, is the woman Thom loves and wants to marry. But she is hesitant to get further involved because she finds Thom's work for the nightclub owner distasteful. As Thom's boss plots a solution to his money problem, Thom is asked to involve Prae in a ruse. Things spiral out of control, and the two are caught in a web of consequences that gets worse and worse. The lesson in Black Silk plays out as a cautionary tale to all who do not consider the consequences of their actions.
