Sanichari lives alone in a village in Rajasthan, India, working as a bonded laborer. One day, Bhikni, a rudali (professional mourner) comes to stay with Sanichari prior to the death of the local landlord and Sanichari relates her life of miseries to her -- born into a lower caste, Sanichari's father had died shortly after her birth and then her mother had abandoned her to join a traveling performance troupe. However, through all of her misfortunes, her husband's death and the departure of her only son, Sanichari had never shed a tear, with her heart hardened to the harshness of life. Bhikni tries to change that for her by encouraging her to become a rudali, a profession that would give her the money and respect that has so far been out of her reach. Through an unexpected twist of events, Sanichari is transformed. A picture is worth a thousand words, and so are the photos in this documentary as they weave together the history of Korea by disclosing the faces of ordinary people on the streets, in the rural areas going about their lives as history unfolds before them, often in tragic terms. This is a documentary that inspires its viewers to find out more about the events causing the pictures they see. The documentary begins with blank expresses of contemporary Koreans inside a huge shopping center. Most have been laid off work as the economic bubble has collapsed. I. Lost Faces 1945-1948: People and streets show people and places unaware of the impending war. II. Refugees and Prisoners of War 1950-1953: Faces under the shadow of war. III. Mobilization and Labor 1953-1966: The mobilization triggered by war, the fatigue of labor and the human mind.
