A picture is worth a thousand words, and so are the photos in this documentary as they weave together the history of Korea by disclosing the faces of ordinary people on the streets, in the rural areas going about their lives as history unfolds before them, often in tragic terms. This is a documentary that inspires its viewers to find out more about the events causing the pictures they see. The documentary begins with blank expresses of contemporary Koreans inside a huge shopping center. Most have been laid off work as the economic bubble has collapsed. I. Lost Faces 1945-1948: People and streets show people and places unaware of the impending war. II. Refugees and Prisoners of War 1950-1953: Faces under the shadow of war. III. Mobilization and Labor 1953-1966: The mobilization triggered by war, the fatigue of labor and the human mind.

Back in 1905, just before the onset of the Japanese military occupation over Joseon (present day Korea), about 300 people fled to Cuba via Mexico. With hopes of returning home wealthy, they worked tenaciously at henequen farms. They established their own Korean schools and sent money back to finance the independence movements against Japan, and even eventually partaking in the revolution of Che Guevera. At 2009, the present time, their descendants still reside in Cuba, some as well known painters, musicians and ballerinas, never forgetting their ethnic identity – 'Coreano.' Set in Cuba, the home of sensuous Latin music and the Latin Salsa, cha-cha dancing, and the country of the revolution and passion; this film follows the amazing, but heartbreaking stories of the Koreans. The film explores the idea of hope, love and anxiety; and the deep longing of a people removed from their home.

Mondulkiri is surrounded by jungle forest bordering Vietnam. In the past, colonialism and civil wars devastated the area. And now, invisible capitalism is turning the lives of the Bunong indigenous people in Mondulkiri upside down. Threi and his wife live with his parents and five children. The entire family depends on subsistence rice farming for a living. But the crop yields drop every year. Hoping to afford to buy rice, they plant Dum Long (cassava). Due to unusually hot weather, however, it rots rapidly and the prices go down. Hard work no longer leads to self sustainability. Outsiders keep hijacking the Bunong land and the indigenous people are losing their homes. Nevertheless, they don't give up.

Jin-wook is a North Korean defector, who has just graduated from a center for adjusting to South Korea and is now ready to enter the 'real society.' On his first day of moving to a humble apartment, Jin-wook goes out to buy a blanket and then is shocked by the display of capitalism in a megastore nearby. That night, Jin-wook gets lost and coincidently gets on a taxi, which another North Korean defector Hae-jung drives. Hae-jung and Jin-wook who both are new to Seoul try to find his apartment, but can't find it. When morning breaks, Hae-jung leaves and Jin-wook finally finds home. A few days later, Jin-wook travels to Busan to meet his other North Korean defector friends, but encounters an illegal foreign worker, Ting-woon from Vietnam on the way. Even though they don't understand each other’s languages, Jin-wook accompanies Ting-woon to Booan in Chollabookdo, where Ting-woon’s girlfriend from Vietnam is to marry a Korean man.

The flame reminds me of something I (the director) witnessed in 1991. I was a high school student when I saw a college student set himself on fire. That time people dubbed the politics as "the politics of burning oneself to death". In the June 1987 movement, TV and newspapers reported the death of Hanyol, who was my neighbor. This documentary is a deathbed portrait of Korea.
