Description: The National Archives at Kew holds records of central government departments that were responsible for the United Kingdom's colonial administration and affairs. This collection contains original correspondence from 1624-1951 from the Colonial Office (established 1854), as well as its predecessors, relating to the West Indies. Records are related to civil, economic, political, criminal, and military affairs and include papers of and relating to the Royal Commission on the West Indies (1938-39) and the international Caribbean Commission (1943-). The series contains a section of indentured labor ('coolie') immigration, correspondence with commissioners to enquire on the slaves confiscated by the Crown, and plans for closer association between the separate countries of the British West Indies.
