Democracy is more than just the right to vote. For a country to be truly democratic, its citizens must have the opportunity to affect the development of their society and to take part in the decisions that concern them. In four programmes we focus on democracy and the democratic processes in Southern Africa by following four different grassroots organisations struggling to achieve the dream of democracy.
Access to Water
Following the privatization of the water supply, the poorer citizens suffer since the international water corporation requires that everyone pay for water.
Fishing for Rights
Poor coastal fishermen are at risk of losing their livelihoods following the commercialization of the fishing industry and the subsequent introduction of a fishing permit and a quota system, which the local fishermen have great difficulties in obtaining.
Regaining Lost Land
On the outskirts of the Kalahari Desert a group of people fight to regain their ancestral soil from which they were forcibly removed during apartheid. Whilst these groups have now had their demands acknowledged, they are still far from actually regaining their land.
Fighting for Life
More than 40% of Swaziland’s population is infected with AIDS and everyday life is dominated by the consequences of this disease. In this sea of disaster, a few dedicated HIV-infected women fight to educate and provide relief for the people.

The students from Pumwani is about growing up and learning taking responsibility. But it is also a story about poverty. Stella and Thomas\' story may help us to understand why young Africans risk their lives to reach the lands of opportunities.

Everybody is waiting for the rains in Chief Kambudzi's village in Malawi. Like elsewhere in Africa, all 85 families have a small plot of land as their only means of survival. The rains are several weeks delayed, and last year harvest failed as well. Now even the river has dried up, and the entire village is on the brink of starvation. All the families try to cope as best they can.
Tembo is a farmer. He has a wife, four goats, seven hungry children — and one bag of maize flour to feed them all. As farming fails, he turns to mat making for survival.
Felida is a single mother with five children. Her eldest son just ran away from home, because she could not feed him. Now she begs odd jobs in exchange for some corn shells to feed the remaining four.

In 2001 24 black, coloured and white students from a high school in Cape Town met on a so-called Rainbow Camp. They confronted each other with questions regarding racism and reconciliation in South Africa. Today they meet again.
They were the first 'born-free' generation of South Africa. A generation whose lives were formed after the brutal apartheid regime was abolished and Mandela had come to power. Children of Mandela profiles four of these students, two white and two blacks, who attended the original Rainbow Camp nearly 10 years ago. Back then they were united in their concern for a national reconciliation between races but since then their lives have taken different turns. Are they still committed to a common future? The Rainbow Camp reunion gives this first 'born-free' generation an opportunity to discuss how the new South Africa is really getting along.

From the Greenlandic Inuits to the Native Americans and the Australian Aboriginals, large groups of people are living in the lowest depths of the wealthy societies to which they belong. On our trip around the world we visit the people who have been allotted the job of living as memories of what once was. Here the youth can watch how the rest of the world is thundering along - while they are left without any chances of joining. We paint a picture of indigenous people who - because of colonial guilt and political correctness - have become prisoners of the past. Meanwhile the massive social, economic, and commercial problems are swept under the rug of the injustice these peoples suffered in the past.
