Title: Woman’s Right to All Work According to Aptitudes: Equal Pay for Equal Work. Description: Manuscript of an article written by Elena Meissner the leader of the Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women (AECPFR) and based on a speech she delivered at the joint Constanța Congress of AECPFR and the Union of Roman Women (UFR) in 1936 (September 8th – 10th). The article was later published in AECPFR’s journal Ziarul Nostru (Our newspaper) in its September-October-November, 1936 issue. This is article is important for the ways in which the “equal pay for equal work” slogan and the ideology encapsulated in it was explained by Elena Meissner using the Romanian context and for a Romanian audience. The slogan and its principles have been adopted in Romanian feminist campaigns, especially during the long protest of the 1920s and 1930s in the question of women state clerks. Keywords: Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women, working rights, equal pay

Title: Short Overview on the Feminist Movement. Description: Manuscript of an article or essay, written probably in 1931, by Elena Meissner, leader of the Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women (AECPFR). In this piece, Meissner explains her views on feminism as a social movement an on the question of women’s emancipation. In doing so, she offers a short historical incursion into the evolution of woman’s question from Antiquity to the modern times, provides a history of the development of the international women’s movement and of a national women’s movement in Romania after 1895, and discusses various anti-feminist arguments. The document offers precious information on how Meissner formulated a “liberal progressive feminism” by combining “individualist” and “relational” arguments in demanding the achievement of women’s rights as individual rights that served the collective interest and were essential for the advancement of the whole community (be it family, society or nation). Keywords: Feminism, women’s emancipation, women’s movement, history, Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women

Title: I Renounce to Candidate at the First Local Elections Held in 1930. Description: Document containing Elena Meissner’s public explanation on why she refused to candidate for a local councilor/mayor position during the 1930 local elections. Elena Meissner was the leader of the Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women (AECPFR), one of the most important feminist organizations of the time. In the 1930s, when women obtained the right to vote and be elected in municipal councils, the composition and organization of AECPFR was threatened more than ever by intra-organizational conflicts on the issue of women’s involvement with politics. These conflicts were fueled by the contradiction between the politically non-partisan position embraced by Elena Meissner and other important members of AECPFR and the decision of other members of AECPFR to join political parties. As seen in this document, for Meissner the issue of women’s involvement in politics was not necessarily a question of accepting or forbidding women’s actual enrolment in political parties. It was a question of finding the best feminist strategy to obtain full civil and political rights and in her opinion only a united feminist movement, and not women’s enrolment in parties, would lead to the achievement of these rights. Also, despite her deep distrust of the type of politics practiced by Romanian political parties, she remained faithful to her belief in preserving women’s freedom to make political choices.
