Education of Women in Relation to Their Political and Civil Rights
This document is part of a series from the thirteenth assembly of the Inter-American Commission of Women (Comisión Interamericana de Mujeres (CIM)). The topic of the thirteenth conference was women’s civil and political rights in the Americas. All the documents from this conference focus on various aspects of this topic from women’s suffrage to women’s education.
This report analyzes the equality of suffrage laws for men and women in American nations in order to provide an accurate portrayal of women’s civic equality. Following this analysis, the report provides examples of the CIM’s past support of women’s civic education and lists Inter-American conferences and constitutional articles that supported women’s civil and political rights. It finishes with a description of women’s civic education at some American universities.

Report from the Guatemalan Delegation about the Civil and Political Rights of Women
This report is part of a series of documents from the thirteenth assembly of the Inter-American Commission of Women (Comisión Interamericana de Mujeres (CIM)). The topic of the thirteenth conference was women’s civil and political rights in the Americas. All the documents from this conference focus on various aspects of this topic from women’s suffrage to women’s education.
According to the Guatemalan delegation, because women’s legal rights had been extensively covered elsewhere, this country report focused on women’s civil and political rights. The Guatemalan delegation reported on women’s ability to participate civically and politically by outlining their marriage rights, age of adulthood, and voting rights. The Guatemalan delegation also suggested ways that governments and the CIM could promote women’s participation in citizenship duties.

Report presented by Senora Agnes Chagas, Observer from the Pan American Health Organization: Opportunity of Collaboration of the Latin American woman in health programs
This report by Agnes Chagas of the Pan American Health Organization stressed the need for Latin American women to participate in health programs such as prenatal care and periodic exams. Chagas argued that although women had always been involved in promoting the social welfare of countries, they now needed to take on more permanent roles in their countries as nurses. The nursing profession, according to Chagas, should be recognized as an important and necessary profession for women.
