A showcase of new Army hardware in review, "Project MAN" has a double significance. M-A-N stands for Modern Army Needs. That the initials should spell out the fundamental determining factor of the quality of an army, whatever its equipment, is both intentional and highly appropriate. In addition to the display and demonstration of Army weapons and equipment, most exciting footage has been assembled to show the skills of the Army Rangers. This is not only good, strong entertainment, but it emphasizes the point that the quality of the Army--any army--depends on the quality of its great fighting men. Scenes show Rangers in simulated hand-to-hand combat, very realistically performed; a demonstration of climbing techniques, leaps from a tower with the aid of a resilient rope to reach the ground in a second's time, and finally, shots of Rangers making long cable slides past large-scale underwater explosions.

This video shows the dedicated efforts of citizen soldiers as they maintain strength, fitness, and combat readiness as a full-fledged member of the Army team. Guardsmen assigned to the Nike-Ajax site in Concord, Massachusetts, are shown reacting to an alert warning of an unidentified flying object off the coast. The many and varied roles of the Army National Guard are examined in the film's final montage. Included is the role of the Guard in the event of a natural disaster.

Shows how the ordnance engineering and research centers (most of them known as "arsenals") perform several major jobs in making it possible for the Ordnance Corps to design, procure, supply, and maintain the lethal weapons for the Army's combat units. As explained in the film, these arsenals work in coordination with private engineering and research institutions, both educational and industrial. The achievements of Army ordnance may be attributed in large part to the cooperative efforts of what is often called the Ordnance-Science-Industry team. The Army has long known that each member of this group plays an indispensable part in our technological development, whether it be for the military and its mission or in basic research. "Arms for Tomorrow" is a look-see at America's firepower today--an achievement in military techniques--which meets the demands of our modern Army for swift and powerful striking force to defend our country. Viewers will see how this unique firepower and mobility are developed by the United States Army Ordnance Corps through its dynamic arsenal system.

Resourcefully put together, "The American Way of Life" is built up with excellent footage from award-winning THE BIG PICTURE episodes produced since 1957. For three consecutive years, the George Washington Honor Medal has been presented to the series by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge for its achievement in bringing about a better understanding of the American Way of Life. Using the original soundtracks which featured the voices of Raymond Massey and Alexander Scourby, Host M/Sgt. Stuart Queen individually introduces the film episodes. The first award-winning picture, "Operation Mercy," was made in 1957. It told the story of how Hungarian freedom fighters who escaped from the Russians were helped by the United Sates Army when they arrived at Camp Kilmer, N.J. The next award came the following year, 1958, with a film titled: "Ottumwa, U.S.A." It was the story of a small town in the Midwest that is a living example of everything the American Way of Life stands for. In 1959, THE BIG PICTURE won its third George Washington Honor Medal for three film presentations; the first of these recaptured tumultuous days in the life of "Eisenhower the Soldier." The second, "People to People," described how our servicemen overseas use the not-so-secret weapons of goodwill, friendship, a ready smile and a helping hand to cultivate warm personal relations with people of foreign nations. The third film, "A Debt is Honored," tells how kilted soldiers of the Black Watch, stationed in Canada, accepted a long-standing invitation to be the guest of the 111th Infantry Regiment in Philadelphia. To tell what Freedoms Foundation is and what THE BIG PICTURE has done to further the cause of freedom, Wilber M. Brucker, Secretary of the Army, and Dr. Kenneth Wells, President of the Foundation, are introduced.

Two subjects are covered on film. The first, "The Junior Essex Troop," is the story of an historic National Guard unit and a group of 150 boys, age 11 to 17. Viewers will see how, between them, soldiers and boys keep alive a tradition and a way of life now gone from the modern scene. The National Guard unit is the 102nd Armored Cavalry in West Orange, New Jersey. Formed in 1931 as a cadet auxiliary of the famous Essex Troop, the Junior Essex Troop is believed to be the only junior cavalry squadron in the country sponsored by a National Guard unit. The charter of the troop states as its purpose: "to encourage patriotism, and to foster the love of horses among boys, and to train boys in the art of horsemanship, cavalry drill, marksmanship, military training and discipline." The Junior Essex Troop Horse Show, staged annually in which all the contestants are teenage or under, provides a colorful climax to the story. The second story, "Umbrellas of the Sky," tells how in the years since man first realized an age-old dream and took to the air, the parachute has played a role of ever-increasing importance. Today, the parachutes, like flight itself, serve in hundreds of ways the purposes of both peace and combat. The unusual scenes show highlights in the development of these "Umbrellas of the Sky.

Army Digest No. 5' brings a three-fold story to the television public: "Nike Hercules," "The Nike and The Torri," and "Hawaii - 50th State." For the first time THE BIG PICTURE shows the TV viewer the awesome destruction and power of one of America's latest defense weapons. The Nike-Hercules' fantastic accuracy is demonstrated graphically as it seeks, finds, and destroys the Army Corporal missile in flight. Many a veteran of the Pacific will welcome this episode's re-visit of Okinawa. The changes that have taken place on this important island include the replacement of our anti-aircraft sky sweeper weapons with modern missiles. As vulnerable as it is vital to our defense, Okinawa welcomes the protection it is receiving from the Nike installations on this keystone island in the Pacific. With the embracing of romantic Hawaii as the 50th State of the United States, THE BIG PICTURE takes another look at this newest addition. Long known for her carefree way of life, Hawaii has yet another distinctive characteristic--a mixture of many races and religions. Audiences will see how these separate cultures and ideals are woven into a tapestry that is distinctively Hawaiian. In her blue Pacific setting, she is truly an extension of the free soil of America.
