In the letter, she vigorously denied any association or support for the legionary movement and its ideology, arguing that her political beliefs were nationalist and liberal and made appeal to her activities in supporting women’s emancipation and social assistance in defending herself. The letter also discusses the circumstances of her home arrest. Keywords: Alexandrina Cantacuzino, politics, legionary

Description: Answers to the questionnaire sent, in 1938, by the Suffrage Section of the International Council of Women to national councils. The answers validated by Alexandrina Cantacuzino, the leader of the organization, show preoccupation with the political regime of the time – the ban on political propaganda and censorship stopped any militancy for women’s political rights and there was a tendency towards the elimination women from their previous positions in public life, except in the fields of social assistance and education. Title: Speech Read in Behalf of Mrs. Alexandrina Cantacuzino by Mrs. Elena General Stângaciu at the Meeting Organized by the Colentina branch on Sunday, July 26 1931. Description: Manuscript of a speech held in 1931 by a member of Romanian Women’s Association, Elena Stângaciu, in behalf of Alexandrina Cantacuzino, the leader of the organization. The speech is important for the ways in which a “new politics” of women was defined by the leader of the organization. This “new politics” of women, characterized by a refusal to enter political parties’ structures, political non-partisanship, female solidarity and sacrifice for the public service, was to emerge in opposition to men’s politics, harshly criticized for going against the public interest and cultivating a destructive competition. Keywords: Alexandrina, Cantacuzino, feminism, politics, women’s emancipation

Title: Speech Held by Mrs. Alexandrina Cantacuzino at the GFR Congress at Cluj on January 21, 1933. Description: Alexandrina Cantacuzino’s speech at a Romanian Women’s Association Congress at Cluj on January 21, 1933 in which corporatist ideas started to be used in supporting women’s higher participation in the public life. Canatcuzino’s orientation towards the doctrine of corporatism came in line with her constant preoccupation with the idea of attainment of social solidarity through the spiritual reformation and education of individuals in the spirit of sacrifice and communitarian values. In Cantacuzino’s particular reading of the corporatist ideology, the corporatist organization of the state had the advantage of offering the intelligentsia more possibilities to become involved in the political decision-making through a higher representation in the Senate. The corporate state could also give educated strata (of women) the opportunity to become more involved with better and more efficiently organized social and educational activities for the masses. This was considered important not only for the advance of women’s rights but also for the achievement of a better society. Title: Speech Held at the Public Meeting of the Romanian Women’s Association, June 18, 1932, at the Lidertafel Hall. Description: Speech delivered by Alexandrina Cantacuzino, leader of the Romanian Women’s Association, at the meeting of the organization held in Bucharest, at the Lidertafel Hall on June 18, 1932. In this speech, Canatcuzino claimed women’s political rights using a discourse in which the achievement of female suffrage was connected to women’s character and functions in society and their contribution to the revival of the national spirit endangered by “politicianism”: “On these bases and acknowledging the gravity of the situation we demand political rights [emphasized in original], to serve as humble soldiers of the truth and justice this country, built and preserved in its ethnic and moral integrity by Romanian mothers. Therefore, granting women political rights [emphasized in original] is an imperious act of forestalling, not only because women are constantly demanding it, not because the justice imposes it, but because is a collective necessity for strengthening the country in all respects and for [working at] the welfare of the country.” The speech touches also on other topics such as demands for a decrease in public expenditure, the reorganization of state structures and support for agriculture to fight the economic and financial crisis. Keywords: Romanian Women’s Association, suffrage, politics

Title: The Speech of Mrs. Alexandrina Gr. Cantacuzino at the General Meeting of the National Council of Romanian Women, Bucharest, December 13, 1936. Description: Speech of Alexandrina Cantacuzino, leader of the National Council of Romanian Women, at the 1936 general meeting of the organization. At that time, the aim of the suffragist campaign was to obtain full political rights for women, after the achievement of local political rights for certain categories of women in 1929. But in this speech, Cantacuzino declared that she was informed “by an important politician” that women had no chances to obtain full political rights. They could be offered only the right to vote for the Parliament. The speech offers also details, among others, about Cantacuzino’s participation to the 1936 Dubrovnik Congress of the International Council of Women (ICW) and mentions her trip, as a member of ICW’s executive board, to Calcutta where she attended the Indian National Council of Women’s conference of the same year. Title: The Congress of the Romanian Women’s Association in Brasov, November 12.13.14, 1938. The Speech of Mrs. Alexandrina Gr. Cantacuzino on the Topic ‘Women and the New Romanian Constitution.’ Description: Speech held by Alexandrina Gr. Cantacuzino, leader of the Romanian Women’s Association in Brasov, November 12.13.14, 1938. At that time, certain categories of women obtained partial political rights, and the inclusion in the new constitution of this restrictive and incomplete version of women’s political rights was received with great joy and celebrated with fast. In this speech, Cantacuzino’s argumentation was directed towards increasing women’s public role (she decries the elaboration of a social work law without the consultation of women’s organizations) and the recognition of women’s legitimacy to weight upon the transformation of political and state life from their positions as mothers. Also, in this speech Cantacuzino’s “internationalist” image is rather paradoxical if we take into the account the context in which the speech was delivered. In that period, the Romanian Women’s Association under Cantacuzino’s leadership became very adamant in promoting and demanding ethnic discriminatory measures using eugenic and economic arguments. In these conditions, it is difficult to understand how in this period Cantacuzino could play both the roles of “internationalist” seeking connections with minority women and fervent “nationalist” committed to exclusionary politics at the same time. This unless one does not take into account the fact that for Cantacuzino this “internationalism” was first of all another way of bringing a contribution to the building of the Romanian nation-state. Title: Speech given by Princess Alexandrina Canatcuzino at the banquet that the International Council of Women organized in Geneva for the women delegates and experts at the League of Nations. Description: Speech, in French, held by Alexandrina Cantacuzino at the banquet that the International Council of Women organized in Geneva for the women delegates and experts at the League of Nations, in the period 1925 - 1930. The speech proves the support provided by Romanian representatives of the Romanian women’s movement, especially Alexandrina Cantacuzino, to the pacifist programs of ICW and IAW and their involvement with activities supporting the principles and program of pacification of the world promoted by the League of Nations. It does also give an account of the maternalist approach to the legitimacy of women’s involvement with public international affairs, approach that also legitimized women’s rights to full political suffrage and equal rights. Keywords: Internationalism, League of Nations, pacifism, women’s activism, ICW, maternalism

Title: Housewives and Their Rights. Description: Manuscript of an article written by Alexandrina Cantacuzino, leader of several women’s organization with a suffragist agenda, without date, probably from May 1938. In the article, Cantacuzino supported the right of housewives to vote in parliamentary elections. Because of the corporatist structure of the parliament this category of women without any lucrative occupation was excluded from the vote since it could not enter the elector body under any occupational category. In this article, Cantacuzino demanded from the government that these women be able to vote for the Deputies Chamber or at least for the Senate. Her arguments, based on a eulogy of motherhood, cited the necessity of housewives’ voting rights given their work in the family and their educating of the future generation. Cantacuzino also supported her demand with the argument that other countries recognized officially that household management was a lucrative occupation. Therefore, Romania also must recognize household management as an occupational category and housewives must receive their political rights.
