This document provides an overview of the French Association of University Women, a national affiliate of the International Federation of University Women. The French branch (as well as the English and American branches) of the organization were founded after the First World War in an effort to promote “moral and intellectual reconstruction” and professional exchange among women. The French and American branches of the organization historically maintained an especially strong relationship with one another, particularly with the establishment of Reid Hall in Paris which became an academic center for American women in the 1920s. Although the Second World War disrupted the activities of the French branch, it nevertheless continued its commitment to offering national and international scholarships to prospective students; in the context of war, to refugee women from Poland and Czechoslovakia.

This document provides a brief history of the Swiss Association of University Women, part of the International Federation of University Women. In 1923, a physician created a group of professional women in Geneva and, after building ties in Basel, Bern, and Zurich, a national organization of university women was formed in 1924. That year, the Swiss Association applied for a membership charter with the International Federation. By 1931, the Swiss Association contained seven local groups which met each year in sites alternating between German-speaking Switzerland and French-speaking Switzerland. The remainder of the document details the Association’s organization at the national level, including its scholarship initiatives and an elaboration on its various committees: professional interests, women’s interests, domestic affairs, and international relations.

According to the group’s history, membership was small in the early years since so few Belgian women held degrees and since many of them pursed individual goals. Membership began to expand during the interwar period, so that by the end of World War II, the Federation was building contacts internationally as well as with other women’s organizations in Belgium to promote the goals of gender equality.

This document outlines a brief history of the Italian branch of the International Federation of University Women, which was presented to the organization’s conference in Zurich during August 1950. The Italian group, named the Federazione Italiana Laureate e Docenti Istituti Superiori (FILDIS) was created in 1920 after an Italian delegate attended the International Federation’s first gathering. Like the International Federation, the goals of the Italian section in its early years were to build coalitions among women and to contribute to peaceful collaboration among women worldwide. By 1921, with the Milan and Rome sections of the group unified, the organizers turned to the adoption of a national constitution. The group, however, had a difficult relationship with Italy’s fascist government (1922-1943), particularly in protecting the ambitions of university women, and the group was forced to disband in 1935 because of its liberal politics. The group was reconstituted in 1944 after the military liberation of Rome during the Second World War. The remainder of the document outlines the group’s postwar reorganization and its various initiatives in national reconstruction, like awarding scholarships to young women wishing to study abroad.

The Luxembourg Federation of University Women was founded in 1923 and admitted into the International Federation of University Women in 1925. The brief history of the organization reports that in its infancy, the Federation was very small and did not engage in large activities. The author attributes this to the fact that secondary schooling for women in Luxembourg was only offered in 1909, meaning that few women maintained the credentials to belong to the organization. As the history explains, the organization’s numbers grew by the period of World War II, and by war’s end, members were especially active in humanitarian work including assisting war orphans and developing exchange programs with other national federations.
