This item is part of series of materials from Container 126: “Committee of Trafficking in Women and Children,” League of Nations Office, held at the Archivio Storico Diplomatico del Ministero degli Affari Esteri (ASDMAE) in Rome, Italy. This fascicolo, or folder, is titled: Abolition of brothels. The corresponding term for brothel in Italian is case di tolleranza and in French is maisons de tolerance. This item includes materials that compare brothels, venereal diseases, and the different degrees of tolerance and nuances of abolitionism. It contains reports from the Committee on the Traffic in Women and Children, such as “Suppression de la réglementation de la prostitution”; “Résolutions adoptees par le Comité de la traite des femmes et des enfants”; and the “15th session of the Assembly, 5th Committee.” It offers a classification of countries: a) those where prostitution is allowed and regulated, b) those in which brothels are forbidden but prostitution is partially regulated, and c) those where prostitution is completely banned. Excerpts are also included from the following: Venereal diseases Conference held in Geneva on June 25th 1929 – extract from Rassegna di Clinica, Terapia e Scienze Affini, Anno XXVIII, Fasc. IV, July-August 1929; L’Experience de Grenoble, premiere étape, Association Dauphinoise d’Hygiene Morale, n.d.; the Union Temporaire ontre la prostitution réglementée et la traite des femmes, Paris, 3 May 1933, Séance; and Position of Italian Ministry of the Interior vis à vis abolition of prostitution and brothels, 23 February 1932. Finally, a Ministry of the Interior document from 23 February 1928 considered abolitionism as an “intellectualist utopia” which would make prostitution clandestine and still allow it to flourish, as anyone visiting Geneva –where prostitution was abolished- can experience. This item includes materials in French and Italian languages.
