Title: ‘The Conditions of Rural Women’s Life in Romania. Proper Improvement Measures’, in the Bulletin of the National Council of Romanian Women. Description: Detailed report on the condition of rural women’s life and on the efforts deployed by feminist organizations in improvement the condition of rural women. These efforts were mainly directed towards the establishment of adult schools and horticultural schools for women in the countryside. The education of rural women in that period suffered greatly for lack of schools and/or of traditionalist mentalities that prevented women’s access to education. It was also argued that horticulture was profession that almost disappeared in the period and, therefore, the revival of this professional field could offer peasant women a way of undertaking an occupation that could bring in a substantial income. Description: Manuscript of an address to higher-class women, in behalf of the Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women (AECPFR), in which the organization asked their support in the organization of schools for rural women (presented as feminist nuclei). As in the case of other women’s organization, AECPFR’s attitude towards rural women was a protectionist and sometimes patronizing one. The document is relevant in this sense – higher class women are urged to educate and guide peasant women in fulfilling their duties as “mothers, wives and citizens”.
