This document is a transcript of American Judge Dorothy Kenyon’s appearance on an Austrian radio show on January 13, 1949. The announcer introduces Kenyon as a delegate to the UN Commission on the Status of Women and a women’s rights activist in the United States. After the announcer’s introduction Kenyon greets listeners in English (her words are not included in this German-language transcript). The announcer proceeds to give a German translation of Kenyon’s declaration on women’s rights in the Soviet Union and the United States. The declaration outlines the status of women in both nations, specifically addressing and refuting communist claims that Soviet women have a stronger influence on their government than American women. Kenyon points to the first female senator in the United States and eight women elected to the House of Representatives as examples of progress in the United States. The Judge concludes her declaration with the caution that gender equality on paper in the Soviet Union does not necessarily mean equality in practice.
