Two typed pages, numbered 20 and 40 (20) with the label 'New p.' in green pencil on the first page, contain a discussion of the magical speeches of the Trobriand Islanders. The first page contains a long, central paragraph with a partial sentence set apart above and below. At the top of the paragraph, in the left margin, is the title 'Division V. Digression on the General Theory of Magical Language.' The passage acknowledges questions raised by a theoretical approach to magical speech, particularly having to do with dual strange yet intelligible nature of the speech the genesis of such words. It is edited in red, black and green pencil and accompanied by margin notes written in those same colors, and then crossed out. Two passages on the second page, also edited in green pencil, answer the questions posed.

Four densely typed pages with torn corners contain a report on Kiriwinian trading expeditions to other Trobriand Islands and beyond, prepared for M.H. Moreton, Resident Magistrate of the South Eastern District, Papua, New Guinea. Malinowski offers a summary overview of the Kula trading cycle, noting that some voyages trade in usable goods and food, while others trade in symbolic wealth items. Described are: customs and practices of canoe preparation and launch; sailing; trading and relations with other villages; and departures and returns. The notes end with lists of trade items exported from and imported to Kiriwina. A title is handwritten on one corner of the back of the last page, such that it will be in the upper right corner when the entire package is folded.

At the bottom is a partial footnote. In the left margin, the number 21 is written in green ink. The second page is a continuation of the lengthy footnote, primarily comparing Malinowski's approach to several others', and particularly that of Edward Sapir and Otto Jespersen. It includes margin and end notes in green pencil.
