Description: Letter from Calipso Botez to Elena Meissner, leader of the Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women (AECPFR), written on March 21, 1934. Calypso Botez was an important feminist figure of the interwar Romania, founding member of the feminist organizations AECPFR and Solidaritatea, president of the National Council of Romanian Women (CNFR, 1921 – 1930) and the first woman to hold a position in the Permanent Council of the Minister of Public Instruction. Starting with 1929, when partial political rights were granted to women, she supported the National Peasant Party (PNȚ) as the only party that promised firmly to support women’s enfranchisement in local elections. This letter tells the story of how enrolment or support of diverse political parties caused rifts between members of the feminist organizations. In 1934 a conflict between Calypso Botez and Elena Dimitriu Castană, the leader of the Constanța section of AECPFR, began due to their different political options (the latter was a member of the National Liberal Party). Botez tells Meissner in this letter how this conflict became public in that there were articles published in newspapers, articles in which the activity of Bucharest female councilors was deprecated. Keywords: Feminism, politics, political rights, political party, Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women

Title: ‘The Conditions of Rural Women’s Life in Romania. Proper Improvement Measures’, in the Bulletin of the National Council of Romanian Women. Description: Detailed report on the condition of rural women’s life and on the efforts deployed by feminist organizations in improvement the condition of rural women. These efforts were mainly directed towards the establishment of adult schools and horticultural schools for women in the countryside. The education of rural women in that period suffered greatly for lack of schools and/or of traditionalist mentalities that prevented women’s access to education. It was also argued that horticulture was profession that almost disappeared in the period and, therefore, the revival of this professional field could offer peasant women a way of undertaking an occupation that could bring in a substantial income. Title: The Congress of the Assoc[iation] f[or] the C[ivil] and P[olitical] E[mancipation] of R[omanian] W[omen]. Extracts from the Report of May 21st , 1932 [written] on the Occasion of the Meeting of the Delegates of the Local Branches of the Assoc[iation] f[or] the C[ivil] and P[olitical] E[mancipation] of R[omanian] W[omen] for the Modification of Statutes. Description: Manuscript of extracts of a report on the discussions held at a meeting in Iași on the modification of the statutes of the Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women (AECPFR) on May 21st, 1932. The document gives an indication on the degree to which the conflict over women’s enrollment in political parties divided not only the Romanian women’s movement but also the members of feminist organizations such as AECPFR. In the 1930s, when women obtained the right to vote and be elected in municipal councils, the composition and organization of AECPFR was threatened more than ever by intra-organizational conflicts on the issue of women’s involvement with politics. These conflicts were fueled by the contradiction between the politically non-partisan position embraced by Elena Meissner and other important members of AECPFR and the decision of other members of AECPFR to join political parties. The decision of the women belonging to the latter group resulted sometimes in their withdrawal from the organization or in the estrangement of members who did not share their political beliefs. Moreover, because of these conflicts, other women became much more reluctant to become involved with an association undertaking an open campaign for women’s political rights and which was now, more than before, under the critical and often ironic public scrutiny for aiming to involve women in politics. Keywords: Elena Meissner, feminism, Association for the Civil and Political Emancipation of Romanian Women, political rights, politics, local suffrage

Description: Answers to the questionnaire sent, in 1938, by the Suffrage Section of the International Council of Women to national councils. The answers validated by Alexandrina Cantacuzino, the leader of the organization, show preoccupation with the political regime of the time – the ban on political propaganda and censorship stopped any militancy for women’s political rights and there was a tendency towards the elimination women from their previous positions in public life, except in the fields of social assistance and education. Title: Speech Read in Behalf of Mrs. Alexandrina Cantacuzino by Mrs. Elena General Stângaciu at the Meeting Organized by the Colentina branch on Sunday, July 26 1931. Description: Manuscript of a speech held in 1931 by a member of Romanian Women’s Association, Elena Stângaciu, in behalf of Alexandrina Cantacuzino, the leader of the organization. The speech is important for the ways in which a “new politics” of women was defined by the leader of the organization. This “new politics” of women, characterized by a refusal to enter political parties’ structures, political non-partisanship, female solidarity and sacrifice for the public service, was to emerge in opposition to men’s politics, harshly criticized for going against the public interest and cultivating a destructive competition. Keywords: Alexandrina, Cantacuzino, feminism, politics, women’s emancipation
