In 1932, Alexandrina Cantacuzino invited the minority women’s associations from Transylvania to participate at the congress of GFR in Cluj and discuss together “the advantages and disadvantages of the universal suffrage”. As the letter also shows, this invitation worried the leaders of GFR branches based in Transylvania. The participation of minority women could also raise tensions at the meeting since the Transylvanian GFR members planned to commemorate at the meeting the 40th anniversary of the Memorandum trial of Romanian nationalists and celebrate women’s involvement with preserving the national identity during the Hungarian rule. The topic of the thirteenth conference was women’s civil and political rights in the Americas. All the documents from this conference focus on various aspects of this topic from women’s suffrage to women’s education.
This report analyzes the equality of suffrage laws for men and women in American nations in order to provide an accurate portrayal of women’s civic equality. Following this analysis, the report provides examples of the CIM’s past support of women’s civic education and lists Inter-American conferences and constitutional articles that supported women’s civil and political rights. It finishes with a description of women’s civic education at some American universities.

Title: Housewives and Their Rights. Description: Manuscript of an article written by Alexandrina Cantacuzino, leader of several women’s organization with a suffragist agenda, without date, probably from May 1938. In the article, Cantacuzino supported the right of housewives to vote in parliamentary elections. Because of the corporatist structure of the parliament this category of women without any lucrative occupation was excluded from the vote since it could not enter the elector body under any occupational category. In this article, Cantacuzino demanded from the government that these women be able to vote for the Deputies Chamber or at least for the Senate. Her arguments, based on a eulogy of motherhood, cited the necessity of housewives’ voting rights given their work in the family and their educating of the future generation. Cantacuzino also supported her demand with the argument that other countries recognized officially that household management was a lucrative occupation. Therefore, Romania also must recognize household management as an occupational category and housewives must receive their political rights. Typescript of an article discussing French women’s legal right to vote in 1944. María Collado wrote articles for La Mujer, the journal of her organization. She also wrote for mainstream periodicals and spoke on the radio. Collado frequently challenged contemporary, Ofelia Domínguez Navarro, although Domínguez rarely engaged Collado’s critiques. These essays, articles, and speeches present the egotistical position of an upper-class woman, who wanted to make herself the leader of Cuba’s woman’s movement. Collado wanted the Cubans to follow the North American feminist example, but she wanted to dominate the movement entirely. María Collado Romero was one of the first leaders of the Cuban woman’s movement. She was born in 1885 and died in the middle of the 1960s in Cuba. As a member of the upper class, as class that was dominating politics after Cuban independence from Spain, she believed it was her patriotic duty to lead women into a liberal, democratic society. She took the initiative when she began publishing feminist articles in the journal that she founded and funded, Protectora de la Mujer. The title reflected her sense of responsibility toward women in an emergent democracy. Throughout Cuba nascent women’s rights organizations sprang up, and she founded the Partido Nacional Sufragista and named herself its president. Later she joined the women’s club that drew a national membership, the Club Femenino de Cuba, and served as its publicity chairman. She separated from the Club Femenino in 1924 and formed her own political party, Partido Demócrata Sufragista. Once again she appointed herself the president of the party and led her membership in support of President Gerardo Machado. During his presidency/dictatorship, she served in his Labor Department as the compliance officer who went into industrial, financial, and service establishments to make sure that they respected labor legislation that protected women. As a journalist, she wrote for newspapers and journals such as La Discusión, La Nación, Heraldo Liberal, La Tarde, and Bohemia. She was the Machado’s parliamentary reporter, comparable to the press secretary. In 1932, she founded and edited La Mujer that remained in circulation until 1942. She also spoke on the radio for women’s labor and suffrage rights.
