Two typed pages numbered 104 and 104a, with the numbers 1237 and 1238 written in red ink above, contains an apparent fragment of a theoretical study of language. The first begins with a partial passage about the danger calls of certain village residents, possibly Trobriand Islanders; and likens the utterance and the action it produces to the conditioned response of behavioral psychology. At the bottom is a partial footnote. In the left margin, the number 21 is written in green ink. The second page is a continuation of the lengthy footnote, primarily comparing Malinowski's approach to several others', and particularly that of Edward Sapir and Otto Jespersen. It includes margin and end notes in green pencil.
