The great master violinist Yehudi Menuhin (1916 – 1999) joined a group of friends at the Charlie Chaplin Studios in 1947 to record the legendary Hollywood music film, “Concert Magic”. This video releases the film for the first time for home viewing. When it was premiered at the Stage door Cinema in San Francisco, it was the first ever concert filmed for movie audiences. Yehudi Menuhin was 32 years old and had already climbed to enormous heights of critical success and popularity. He and the other musician played classical and romantic works for the recording. The one hour long bonus track features “The Story behind Concert Magic”. In 1997, 50 years after the creation of the film, Yehudi Menuhin and Humphrey Burton (director of a number of Leonard Bernstein concerts and an expert biographer of Menuhin) viewed the film in front of the cameras. Menuhin recalled the making of the film in an interview and added many interesting details with regards to music, filming, artists and the idea behind it all.

He plays on the world-famous Silbermann Organ in Freiberg (Saxony). The organ was completed in 1714 and thoroughly restored in 1982/1983 and it closely retains its original condition. Bach adored his contemporary Gottfried Silbermann’s organs for their exquisite sound and the recording allows the listener to enjoy this sound to the full while offering a closer look at this marvellously crafted instrument. In the second part of this DVD Ton Koopman is “At Home with Bach!” He plays favourite harpsichord pieces and accompanies the eminent Bach Singer Klaus Mertens in popular arias. The programme was filmed in the enchanting Gohlis Castle near Leipzig, a late baroque jewel built in 1755.

Pierre Henry: DraculaThe late French composer Pierre Henry was among the pivotal forces behind the development of musique concrète, becoming the first formally educated musician to devote his energies to the electronic medium. His final work Dracula was originally composed with two different tracks: one with Richard Wagner’s music (mainy his ‘hits’) and the second one with horror film soundtracks. The orchestra Le Balcon – 17 musicians on stage and 30 speakers everywhere in the theatre – bring the music in a canon-like merry-go-round to life: one half performs Wagner, the other half plays film soundtracks up until they reverse their roles.
