Moral Code Experiments

Description: Ariely has been researching morality, ethics, and behavioral economics for more than a decade and continues to do so today. He has run many experiments to see when and under what circumstances individuals would cheat. In one experiment, subjects were given five minutes to answer 20 questions. For each question correctly answered, they would receive one dollar. At the end of the five minutes, the subjects were told to shred their answer sheet and then tell the experimenter how many questions they had answered. The shredding machine had been fixed so that the papers remained intact. The results showed that, on average, subjects answered four questions but reported that they answered six questions. In another experiment, subjects were given money to take a test and then told to return some of the money for each incorrect answer. One group of subjects included a paid actor who sat at the front of the room, announced that he had answered all the questions correctly within the first 30 seconds and walked out. After seeing someone else successfully cheat, the rate of cheating among the subjects increased.
