Women in the Socialist Workers International. Report submitted by the Third International Women’s Conference of the Socialist Workers International and the Third Congress of the Socialist Workers International by the Secretariat of the Socialist Workers International
This is the report of the Secretariat of the Socialist Workers International (SAI in its German acronym) of a Women’s Conference that took place in Brussels in December 1926 and was included in the proceedings of the Third Congress of the SAI (August 5-11, 1928). On August 29, 1926 the SAI Executive Committee voted unanimously to organize the women’s conference with the specific goal of establishing an international women’s committee with one to three representatives from each country. Eighteen delegates from twelve countries attended the conference in Brussels. The report lists the bylaws adopted by the women’s committee at the
1926 conference and notes that the SAI Executive approved the bylaws in Paris in February 1927. A. Susan Lawrence of Great Britain served as the committee’s representative to the International Labor Union Conference in Paris, July 29-30, 1927. The Women’s Committee met in Cologne, December 9 -10, 1927 to propose topics for the Third Congress of the SAI. Topics
included recommendations for the political labor movement and trends of mobilization for women during wartime. The Women’s Committee also began publishing a women’s supplement (“Frauenbeilage”) to the SAI publication “International Information.” The report also includes individual country reports, a tribute to deceased member Nina Bang from Denmark, and a chart of Socialist women’s organizations and female political participation by nation.

Report of the Third International Women’s Conference of the Socialist Workers International: Volkshaus Conference Room in Brussels, 3-4 August 1928, Section 8
These excerpted meeting minutes of the Third International Women’s Conference of the Socialist Workers International (SAI) in 1928 expand upon the two main themes proposed by the Women’s Committee in 1927 for the Conference (make a hard link to document #1996). The first agenda item included Socialist recommendations for the political labor movement concerning mothers and children, female factory workers, and poor relief. The second agenda item discussed the mobilization of women during wartime. The executive committee of the SAI Women’s Committee included Marie Juchacz (Germany), Dorota Kluszynska (Poland), A. Susan Lawrence (Great Britain), Elizabeth Ribbius-Peletier (Holland), and Adelheid Popp (Austria). Three appendices include proposals for the International Women’s Conference, the conference resolutions, and a delegate list divided by country.
