EXTRA! Killer Misses Roosevelt--Cermak Shot
MIAMI, Fla. -- Assassin fires five shots in attempt on life of the President-elect at conclusion of welcome ceremonies in sea-side park. Mayor Anton J. Cermak of Chicago critically wounded as bullets aimed at the next Chief Executive go wild, cutting a swath among by-standers. Two women are among those hit, one of whom is near death. Hectic scenes mark the infamous shooting, the arrest of Giuseppe Zangara, the anarchist mad-man, and the hurried efforts to succor the victims. Unscathed, the future President heads the first-aid and emergency measures in rushing his close friend and supporter, Cermak and the others to a near-by hospital. Zangara, quizzed by an iron ring, maintains his defiance and gloats over his deed.

BOSTON, Mass. -- The New England fishing fleet catches the tail end of the blizzard and cold wave that has scourged the United States. The various ships have to put back to port because of the ice that rapidly forms on decks and riggings. Heroic efforts and superb seamanship bring the vessels safely in but it takes many long and bitter hours to chop the frozen spume from lines and superstructure.

BERLIN, Germany -- For the first time since the days of the Hohenzollerns, a pompous State funeral is held here, with the German Chancellor and high officials of the Reich and of the Nazi organization taking leading parts in the solemn procession behind caskets bearing a National Socialist storm troop leader and a State policeman killed during the torchlight parade in honor of the new regime. 20,000 Brown Shirts follow the cortege, as 100,000 spectators look on. One of the most impressive scenes of the year.

The little "come-on" is let down into the water by a string tied to its tail. Continuous skirmishes along the front, where the opposing armies are face to face, awaiting the impending Jehol drive, are rapidly assuming more vigor in this warfare that isn't a war. Gen. Ho proves he is no "dug-out commander" by frequent visits to the firing lines.
