SPECTATORS TOUCHED AS FADING G.A.R. RANKS PASS IN BRAVE ARRAY
(116)
NEW YORK, N. Y. -- More than 100,000 line the streets of the Metropolis as the fast-thinning column of veterans of '61, now bent with age, march in memory of their comrades. The most colorful figure in the picturesque parade is John Early, 88-year-old Zouave, lone survivor of the famous regiment in the district. In direct contrast with the aging heroes of the Civil War are 15,000 veterans of the World War, and National Guard units, resplendent in dress uniforms. A stirring memorial to departed "buddies."
VETERANS CONVERGE ON CAPITAL TO PRESS BONUS CASH CLAIMS
(88)
ZANESVILLE, Ohio -- A tired, weather-beaten, and travel-stained "Army" moves toward Washington, D. C., to lay their demands before Congress for settlements on the adjusted compensation for ex-service men of the World War. Governor White furnishes trucks to carry them through, and eliminates trouble with railroads. Camping on roadsides, as they did when they wore khaki, the unemployed ex-soldiers doggedly maintain the march that started on the Pacific Coast.

DEATH VALLEY, Cal. -- Laden with heavy cargoes of gas and observation equipment, 9 huge airplanes of the 11th Bomb Squadron under command of Lieutenant Charles H. Howard take to the skies from March Field on the initial patrol through the treacherous canyons of the dangerous mountain range. For the first time planes fly through the Yosemite Valley and circle Mt. Whitney below the rim of the peaks to study the air currents peculiar to the region. After 8 hours in the clouds the Army eagles return to their base, the thrilling maneuver a complete success.

FT. MONROE, Va. -- Under the critical eye of War Secretary Patrick J. Hurley, artillerymen at this strategic point on the Atlantic frontier test their accuracy with high-powered new-type weapons against attacks from the skies. Firing with deadly aim, the batteries, using 6-inch guns, shoot the projectiles into the air destroying targets trailed by fearless aviators. A new high mark of direct hits is scored with a deadly precision undreamed of until today.
ACCIDENTS MAR AUTO CLASSIC; FRAME SETS NEW 104-MILE MARK
(177)
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Driving a brilliant race throughout the gruelling 500-mile speed test the 37-year-old Los Angeles campaigner slips into the lead after the 350-mile mark and is never headed. Howdy Wilcox, a local product, battles him every inch of the way to the finish, coming home only eight seconds behind the winner. The fastest field that has ever started maintain a murderous pace during the entire grind. A mishap again robs Billy Arnold, youthful Chicago daredevil, of the coveted prize as he crashes through a retaining wall soon after the 100-mile mark. Tony Gulotta piles up in the stretch and narrowly averts disaster. 17 aces stick to the end in the most sensational fight in the history of the event. Fred Frame, today's winner, gains $20,000 as a result of his victory.

DWINDLING RANKS OF G.A.R. PASS IN CLOSING REVIEW OF 66th MEET
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Hoary and bent with the weight of the long years that have passed over them since Appomattox, 700 remnants of the once magnificent Grand Army of the Republic stage their annual reunion march. Tottering nine endless blocks to stirring martial music, while thousands of school children and others line the streets and cheer with tears in their eyes, the aged veterans of '61-'65 are reviewed at Court House Square by their retiring Commander-in-Chief, Samuel P. Town of Philadelphia, and other national officers of the celebrated Civil War association. America's most inspiring and heart-touching event, soon to be enacted no more.
GOVERNMENT ORDERS REINDEER ROUNDUP AS FOOD SUPPLY TO POOR
SKJAAK, Norway -- Indigent Norwegians will fare on steak during the coming winter as the result of a monster deer drive and killing in the Gudbrandsdal Valley. More than 10,000 animals are marked for slaughter from the country's immense herds, and are rapidly transferred into choice cuts, with the less desired parts of the meat made into fox food. The antlered heads are cured and sold for wall decorations and the hides go to make coats. An amazing sight, picturesque and on a grand scale.
GLEEFUL WORKERS HAIL FASHION'S NEW PIPE FAD FOR WOMEN
WEST NEW YORK, N. J. -- Pipe-smoking for women, originating in England, is slated to become popular, according to the prognostications of intrepid pioneers of the sex who are venturing to appear on the streets, in clubs, in offices, on the golf-links and even at hotel roof-gardens with their tobacco pouches and favorite briars. And are the pipe-makers pleased! New effete styles in dudheens are in the making -- light-weight and delicate -- soon to blossom forth in elaborate cigar-store window displays. The female smokestack vanguard say they find this the ideal way to indulge. Maybe it's new, but it might be just a throwback to frontier days, when every "granny" had her corn-cob. Milady Nicotine, with a vengeance!
HISTORIC METROPOLIS HONORS 600th BIRTHDAY OF NATION'S FOUNDING
LUCERNE, Switzerland -- Elaborate pageantry featuring reproductions of ancient lake vessels and thousands of medieval costumes, worn by the descendants of the sturdy mountaineers who forged the Swiss Confederation, residents of this city re-live the stirring scenes that marked the "oath of faith" between the Central cantons in 1332 A.D. The disembarkation of the ships bearing the Uri and Unterwalden delegations are followed by stirring ceremonies in the churches and on the streets. President Motta of the Helvetian confederacy reviews the historic mummers, with his official family and other honor guests.
WILD-EYED FANS GIVE TRIUMPHAL WELCOME TO HOMECOMING "CUBS"
CHICAGO, Ill. -- Headed by Mayor Cermak, local baseball enthusiasts stage a royal celebration for the National League pennant winners. In a gala procession through the Loop district, the happy players perch on the tops of open autos as downtown fandom turns out en masse on the side-walks and in office-building windows to cheer their diamond heroes. A shower of ticker-tape and paper snow-storms greets the popular players in every block. The greatest sports demonstration in the history of the city, and a frenzied send-off for the team, now facing its toughest battle -- the World's Series.
COUNTRYSIDE IN PANIC AS DIRE PLAGUE PERIL MENACES FLOOD AREA
HARBIN, Manchuria -- Cholera and other scourges take deadly toll among the 360,000 homeless Chinese and Russian refugees driven from their abodes by the rising waters of the Amur River. The catastrophe has turned the "Paris of the East" into an Oriental "Venice" and the nearby territory a waste of back-water. The casualty list tops 30,000 as disease-stricken families are deserted on flimsy roofs while the swollen streams engulf house after house. Impressive scenes of this new curse that has befallen the pitiful denizens of strife-torn Manchukuo.
Thrilling rescue of coolie boatman from rampant river's deadly current
Exclusive pictures of a thrilling chapter in the disastrous inundation, caught by the Universal cameraman. His furniture-laden skiff over-turned by the backwash from a passing boat, one of the Chinese fugitives, going down for the third time, is saved by Red Cross workers after an exciting struggle. An unscheduled real-life episode that rivals the most lurid of screen melodramas.

CAMDEN, Ark. -- At least one dead, scores injured, and property damage of $750,000 is the estimated toll of this tragic storm. Sweeping from the south, skirting northern Louisiana, the wind dips over this city cutting from its path the entire business section. The $75,000 Ouachita Court House is left a total wreck. Rescuers dig into the tangled mass, formerly two and three story buildings, seeking missing persons. Trees are uprooted, church steeples toppled, and homes torn to bits by the terrible blast.

Joan and June Barber, just 10 weeks old, win the honors as the youngest present, and to Elizabeth and Phyliss Hofflund go the laurels for the most beautiful. Confounded by the abundance of resemblance, the spectators are too upset to question the awards.
DEVOUT THOUSANDS STRUGGLE TO PRAY ON NATIONAL SAINT'S DAY
(105)
GUADALUPE, Mexico -- More than 500,000 persons make the pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Virgin of Tepeyac, in one of the most impressive religious demonstrations in the country's history. People from all parts of the nation, and many from the United States, trudge along the tiresome way to the basilica, erected on the site where, tradition says, the patron saint appeared to Juan Diego four hundred years ago. Police line the road, carefully watching for anti-clerical forces, but the feast is celebrated without mishap, except for the hundreds treated for bruises in the terrific crush.
