Richard Miles explores the power and the paradox of the 'Greek Thing' - a blossoming in art, philosophy and science that went hand-in-hand with political discord, social injustice and endless war. He paints a fascinating picture of the internal and external pressures that fuelled this unique political and social experiment, one that would pioneer many of the political systems that we still live with today.

The Waffen SS began as Hitler's elite bodyguard and grew into one of the most formidable fighting forces of Nazi Germany. Although part of the infamous SS - and indelibly linked with the excesses of the feared Gestapo, the concentration camps, and the extermination squads, the men of the SS saw themselves as combat soldiers, respected for their courage, feared for their ruthlessness and fanaticism. For these were political soldiers; mature men, recruited for their physical perfection and pure Aryan ancestry. They were drilled in Nazi ideology, indoctrinated to believe in themselves as the master race and their enemies as subhuman. They became the cornerstone of the German defences, who carried on fighting, even when all hope was gone. But they are remembered for their brutality. They killed captured British, Canadian and American soldiers in cold blood, and massacred unarmed French, Belgian and Russian civilians. They were Gladiators on the battlefield, who fought on against impossible odds, but the Waffen SS will forever be tarnished by the atrocities they committed as the willing servants of an evil regime.

Henry’s father had won and defended the crown in battle, to Henry the mark of true regal legitimacy. He was determined to emulate his father and win even greater glory. But to wage the war Henry desired meant emerging from the councillors he had inherited from his father to be his own man. This episode traces Henry’s quest to become a major player in Europe, his successes at the Battle of the Spurs and the Field of the Cloth of Gold, and his eventual humiliation after the Battle of Pavia. Throughout these years his relationship with the brilliant, Machiavellian Thomas Wolsey was central to his reign. But even Wolsey could not disguise the relative impotence of England and her monarchy when compared to the great European powers. By 1525 Henry was having a classic mid-life crisis, with the all too familiar desire to replace his ageing spouse with a younger model. But Henry’s infatuation with Anne Boleyn would change the face of England and alter European power politics for centuries to come.

A portrait of Elizabeth II's grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary, which examines the lasting legacy of the couple who rescued the monarchy from potential disaster. Born and brought up in the Victorian age, George was conservative to his fingertips and an unsuccessful parent who bullied his children. His wife Queen Mary revered the monarchy and obeyed her husband in all things. Yet in the face of social change after the First World War, George turned out to be a remarkable innovator, creating the House of Windsor and reinventing many of the royal traditions that we know today. And during the abdication crisis, Queen Mary was the rock to which the nation turned as a symbol of stability. This series examines the impact of this remarkable couple and shows how their influence still persists to this day.

In the first episode of an exciting three-part series, Professor Robert Bartlett explores how the Normans developed from a band of marauding Vikings into the formidable warriors who conquered England in 1066. He tells how the Normans established their new province of Normandy -'land of the northmen' - in northern France. They went on to build some of the finest churches in Europe and turned into an unstoppable force of Christian knights and warriors, whose legacy is all around us to this day. Under the leadership of Duke William, the Normans expanded into the neighboring provinces of northern France. But William's greatest achievement was the conquest of England in 1066. The Battle of Hastings marked the end of the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy and monarchy. The culture and politics of England would now be transformed by the Normans.
