The Treaty of Versailles, and the League of Nations policy of 'Collective Security', failed to deter German and Italian aggression in the 1920s and 30s. Italy invaded Abyssinia; Germany marched into the Rhineland, and later annexed Austria. British Prime Minister Chamberlain's policy of Appeasement failed, and Czechoslovakia eventually was seized by Germany. After Hitler invaded Poland, war was declared. Quickly the Germans overran Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belgium and finally France. Hitler's plan to to invade England was thwarted during the Battle of Britain. Children in both Germany and Britain were evacuated from the cities, and the civilian population had to contend with the horror of bombing raids. Hitler turned his attention to Russia, launching Operation Barbarossa. At the same time, the Italians and Germans faced British forces in North Africa. The United States entered the war following the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the German advance into Russia ground to a halt just outside Moscow.

For five years during World War II, the Nazis occupied Norway. They were plagued by organised resistance; relatively small numbers of brave men and women, operating in the bleak and mountainous countryside. Theirs was a war of small actions and narrow escapes ... the threat of capture, torture, and death was constant ... any successful actions could result in reprisals on civilians. Fishing boats slipped in and out of the long Norwegian coastline, carrying agents and information. ‘Radio Spies’ monitored the German fleet in the distant and isolated fjords, and provided weather reports for the D-Day
landings, and specially trained commando forces prevented the movement of ‘heavy water’, vital to Hitler’s atomic bomb project. With the end of the war in Europe in May 1945, the 60,000 members of Milorg, the resistance network, took the surrender of the German garrison, now swollen to 365,000 men. One of the greatest achievements of the Norwegian Resistance had been to tie down large numbers of Nazi troops, who would otherwise have been
fighting in mainland Europe.

The vibrant scene in Hong Kong suddenly turned into a bloody storm, and this outpost of the British Empire finally fell.

Tower of London: The Tower of London is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Britain. Now days it is a tourist attraction but over history it had many different uses. Its original use was as a fortress; palace and prison, particularly for high profile and religious captives. It was also used as a residence by such monarchs as Richard the lionhearted, Henry III and Edward I. It was so used as a prison and place of torture and execution. At one stage it was also a home to a menagerie and boasted a number of big cats such as leopards and lions.

Following the Ottoman Empire’s defeat in World War I, Cyprus was annexed by Britain in 1925 to protect its sea route to India via the Suez Canal. The terror group EOKA (Ethnikí Organosis Kipriakou Agonos) was an underground organization formed by the former Greek army officer George Grivas in 1955 to force the British out of Cyprus and unite the Mediterranean island with Greece. Taking the name of the legendary Cypriot hero Dighenis, Grivas conducted his guerrilla war from a secret hideout in the Troodos Mountains. In a campaign of bombing, sabotage and murder, EOKA wrecked government offices, police stations and military installations all over the island, and the radio transmitter in Nicosia was blown up. Turkish Cypriots, who wanted British rule to continue, were also targetted on a lesser scale. During its four-year-long campaign in the 1950s, EOKA was responsible for around 600 deaths. The British responded with emergency measures that included curfews, arrests, imprisonment and the death penalty, but these measures failed to bring the situation under control. Around 10,000 British troops were deployed to try to track down Grivas, but he successfully evaded capture.Eventually, tired of the troublesome protests, the British decided to make Cyprus a republic within the Commonwealth. Grivas ordered a cease-fire – reluctantly (he had not achieved union with Greece). Unlike many other terrorist leaders whose careers ended in death and ignominy, Grivas was promoted to general and feted as a hero, until he was disgraced in a failed coup against the Greek government.

The Cold War turned hot in the middle of the 20th Century. In 1950 the North Korean army launched an invasion on their countrymen in the South; signaling the beginning of the Korean War. The Soviet Union would support North Korea's Stalinist regime, while the US and its allies rallied behind the South, in an attempt to hold off the Red Threat. Millions of civilians would be killed or injured during the conflict, and cities would be destroyed. The war would reinforce the separation between communism and capitalism ideologies, and Korea, formally united, would remain divided for generations to come.

While Pierre Cardin was showing off his 'Oh-So 70's' summer collections, the unrest in Northern Ireland continued amid the 5th anniversary of 'Bloody Sunday', which the IRA commemorated by bombing London’s West End. In politics, China's notorious 'Gang of Four' was expelled from the Communist Party; anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko died in custody in South Africa, and for a time, peace in the Middle East looked promising. But 1977 will be remembered most for the death of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, in August at his home in Graceland.

1984 was a year of Famine, Industrial accidents and another change in leadership behind the Iron Curtain. After the death of Yuri Andropov only two years after he was sworn in as Russian leader, new President Chernenko was given mission: stop the massacre in Afghanistan. There was also an assassination attempt on British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as she attended a conference in Brighton. In India, a pesticide factory owned by Union Carbide released poisonous gases, killing 20,000 in total; on the flipside, Live Aid was organized to try to raise money to end famine and death in Ethiopia.
