Tower of London: The Tower of London is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Britain. Now days it is a tourist attraction but over history it had many different uses. Its original use was as a fortress; palace and prison, particularly for high profile and religious captives. It was also used as a residence by such monarchs as Richard the lionhearted, Henry III and Edward I. It was so used as a prison and place of torture and execution. At one stage it was also a home to a menagerie and boasted a number of big cats such as leopards and lions.

The Cold War turned hot in the middle of the 20th Century. In 1950 the North Korean army launched an invasion on their countrymen in the South; signaling the beginning of the Korean War. The Soviet Union would support North Korea's Stalinist regime, while the US and its allies rallied behind the South, in an attempt to hold off the Red Threat. Millions of civilians would be killed or injured during the conflict, and cities would be destroyed. The war would reinforce the separation between communism and capitalism ideologies, and Korea, formally united, would remain divided for generations to come.

While Pierre Cardin was showing off his 'Oh-So 70's' summer collections, the unrest in Northern Ireland continued amid the 5th anniversary of 'Bloody Sunday', which the IRA commemorated by bombing London’s West End. In politics, China's notorious 'Gang of Four' was expelled from the Communist Party; anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko died in custody in South Africa, and for a time, peace in the Middle East looked promising. But 1977 will be remembered most for the death of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, in August at his home in Graceland.

After the death of Yuri Andropov only two years after he was sworn in as Russian leader, new President Chernenko was given mission: stop the massacre in Afghanistan. There was also an assassination attempt on British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as she attended a conference in Brighton. In India, a pesticide factory owned by Union Carbide released poisonous gases, killing 20,000 in total; on the flipside, Live Aid was organized to try to raise money to end famine and death in Ethiopia.

Meanwhile, at the inquest into the Omagh bombings, the coroner put the blame solely on the IRA; also saying the four weeks of hearing evidence into the disaster was a harrowing experience he would never forget.
