Description
The aircraft soon bought civilians into the firing line as never before and brought about a new form of total war. The shows the origins of aerial bombing initially from Zeppelins. In turn, how the Zeppelins were defeated and how heavy bombers were developed by the major nations. The Treaty of Versailles, and the League of Nations policy of 'Collective Security', failed to deter German and Italian aggression in the 1920s and 30s. Italy invaded Abyssinia; Germany marched into the Rhineland, and later annexed Austria. British Prime Minister Chamberlain's policy of Appeasement failed, and Czechoslovakia eventually was seized by Germany. After Hitler invaded Poland, war was declared. Quickly the Germans overran Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belgium and finally France. Hitler's plan to to invade England was thwarted during the Battle of Britain. Children in both Germany and Britain were evacuated from the cities, and the civilian population had to contend with the horror of bombing raids. Hitler turned his attention to Russia, launching Operation Barbarossa. At the same time, the Italians and Germans faced British forces in North Africa. The United States entered the war following the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the German advance into Russia ground to a halt just outside Moscow.

This film tells the harrowing story of the Japanese occupation of Singapore from 1941-45. Archival film as well as fascinating interviews with two historians, Professors A. Jayathurai and Brian Farrell, relate the tragedy of this important theater of war. But it is the story of Alexander Colburn a young Scotsman who had recently signed on for a four-year stint as a pharmacist in the bustling colonial city that gives the dramatic history a personal dimension. Instead of enjoying a brilliant career in Singapore, Colburn witnessed its swift and violent end, as well as the symbolic end of the British Empire. In the 1930s it was widely believed that Singapore was an impregnable fortress. When the well-trained and equipped Japanese invaded Northern Malaya in 1941 shortly after Pearl Harbor, they easily defeated the under-prepared Indian, New Zealand and Australian troops who had joined the British there. When British officials realized Singapore would fall they evacuated the colonials, leaving the Chinese, Indian and Malay populations to fend for themselves. Throughout this Colburn worked as a medical volunteer, cleaning up the bodies left from Japanese bombing. Two British battleships were sunk with nine hundred British sailors lost and the British surrendered after six weeks. Under the Japanese occupation, one hundred thousand prisoners of war were arrested and imprisoned or executed in six weeks. Colburn was taken prisoner by the Japanese and spent four years in horrendous conditions, with almost no food or medicine available. He used his experience as a pharmacist to help his fellow inmates as much as he could. It is estimated that twenty to thirty thousand people perished in captivity. As Prof. Jayathurai says, "Churchill gave up Malaya for the defense of Europe. This was the end of the British Empire; everything after that was borrowed time." College Adult

‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few’.
In the skies over Southern England in the summer of 1940 the Gladiators of RAF Fighter Command duelled with the German Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain. Winston Churchill called it ‘Britain’s finest hour’. Heavily outnumbered, Hawker Hurricanes and Supermarine Spitfires confronted Junkers Ju87 Stuka divebombers, Messerschmitt Me109 single-engine fighters and twin-engine Me110 fighters over the English coast in one of the most crucial battles of World War II. To lose the battle would have meant Nazi invasion of the British Isles, and the end of the war. Led by Air Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding,OE ‘The Few’ successfully defended Britain against the Luftwaffe, who were superior in both numbers and pilot experience. This is the story of RAF Fighter Command. From its birth during World War I; expansion into World War II; its crucial role at Dunkirk; and the fight against Hitler’s V-weapons. Former pilots remember some extraordinary stories from their battles with Goering’s men, while archive footage brings the excitement and the terror of the dogfights back to life.
