Eddie Izzard stars in this funny, moving and inspiring factual drama about the pioneering work on radar by a little known team of scientists in the run up to the Second World War. On 26 February 1935, Robert Watson-Watt demonstrated for the first time that aircraft could be detected by bouncing radio waves off them. By the time the war began in 1939, radar stations were dotted along the British coast, tracking aircraft at distances of 100 miles away. It was this invention – more than any other – that saved the RAF in the 1940 Battle of Britain. This drama follows those early years as Robert Watson-Watt and his team of scientists worked tirelessly to see their invention taken seriously, from the highs and lows, to the battles for funding and the political wrangling, before getting a final taste of victory.

BBC AMERICA's Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond takes a no holds barred look at Ian Fleming, the man behind the 007 legend whose real life was as exciting, eventful and sexually charged as his famous creation. Set at the outbreak of WWII - mischievous playboy Ian Fleming is untroubled by the specter of impending war - chasing women, collecting rare books and living off his family fortune. Forever in the shadow of his brother Peter (Rupert Evans, World Without End), and an eternal disappointment to his formidable mother Eve (Lesley Manville, Maleficent), Fleming dreams of becoming the 'ultimate' man - a hero, a lover, a brute and the one who always gets the girl. He is finally given some direction in his life when he's recruited by the Director of Naval Intelligence, Admiral John Godfrey (Samuel West, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell), to help in the effort against the Nazis. Suddenly, Fleming finds his chance to shine and prove his worth.

He forced Hitler to account for his violent methods, his apparent contempt for the law and his stated desire to destroy German democracy. Hitler survived the ordeal but it was something he never forgot - and for which he would make Hans Litten pay. Hitler on Trial reveals the little known story of Hans Litten and brings to life the drama of a Berlin court room in the run up to the Second World War.

Penned by Bafta-winner Amanda Coe, Life in Squares dramatizes the extraordinary lives of the Bloomsbury Group, a profoundly influential set of artists and intellectuals. Told over 40 years, from the death of Queen Victoria to the Second World War, the story centres on the close and often fraught relationship between sisters Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf, and Vanessa's sexually complicated alliance with gay artist Duncan Grant. Surrounded by the finest progressive minds of the day - including the renowned writer Lytton Strachey, art critic Clive Bell, and pioneering economist Maynard Keynes - they are determined to shake off the shackles of Victorian England. As the narrative shifts between the decades, their earlier and later lives intertwine; by the 1930s, Vanessa has settled into marriage and motherhood, and Virginia is enjoying huge public acclaim. But the emotional entanglements of their past have taken their toll - can the sisters truly escape the pall cast by their repressive parents, or will they ultimately inflict the same mistakes on generations to come?

August 1914, two weeks after the First World War was declared. 80,000 British troops have arrived in southern Belgium, but they have yet to engage the enemy. Among these professional soldiers are the 4th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, some of the best-trained gunners in the British Army.
Lieutenant Maurice Dease and his friend, Australian Lieutenant Fred Steele, command two companies of riflemen and machine gunners who find themselves camping overnight at Nimy Bridge, the northernmost point of the Mons-Conde Canal. The canal, surrounding the town of Mons, supports 18 bridges stretched along 20 miles of water - but everyone, including Private Sid Godley and his mate Private William Holbrook, expects to be crossing those bridges in the morning. Overnight, however, intelligence reports the Germans may be closer than the British think, and the Royal Engineers, including Lance Corporal Charles Jarvis and his sapper, Private Neary, are ordered to start preparing the bridges for demolition.
What happens next, on Sunday 23 August, tests the soldiers' skill, courage and ingenuity to the absolute limit, leading to the first Victoria Crosses of the First World War. Not everyone will make it through the First Day.

1916, and Britain's armed forces are decimated. Across the country, friends join up to fight together, in new battalions known as 'Pals'. Paddy Kennedy, a warehouse clerk from Manchester, joins the Manchester Pals Battalion alongside his friends Henry, Andy and Jim. They soon discover that the whole of their neighborhood has joined up, including a nearby factory foreman, now their sergeant, Mitchell, and their friend Lizzie, who has become a volunteer nurse.
These pals are set to become part of the largest offensive ever mounted by the British Army, the Battle of the Somme. But after a successful first day, they are ordered to seize control of Trones Wood, a thickly forested copse riddled with enemy soldiers and impossible to navigate. Through all this, they survive shellfire and ambush, evade capture by the Germans and encounter the mysterious Private William Hunt, whose fate will become forever entwined with the life of Paddy Kennedy.
Paddy's journey leads to the deadliest mission of all - the execution by firing squad of one of his pals. How will Paddy survive becoming a soldier?

At the same time, the handsome aristocrat is involved in a passionate love affair with a Parisian woman of polish heritage, a lawyer for the league of nations. Risking his life, Mercier works in the shadows amid a remarkable cast of characters, some known to him as spies, some never to be revealed.
