Y. -- After an epochal rescue by the motorship Belmoira, Fernando de Costa, Willy Rody and Christian Johanssen are transferred to the Norwegian liner Stavangerfjord which carries them here--the unachieved goal of their flight from Lisbon. Exclusive pictures at sea chronicle this event. Brought to this city by steamship, the German aces and their Portuguese companion are heartily welcomed. Only de Costa shows effects of the mis-adventure. Suffering from injuries received in the crash of the Junkers monoplane, and from the effects of starvation he is carried ashore, there to await quick recovery from his hurts.

THE YANKS IN KWAJALEIN
As the American victory mounts, island by island, in the tremendous Marshall campaign, we watch the Marines in some of their high-powered handling of the resisting Japs, at Kwajalein.
The Devildogs pour lead into burning block houses, and the shrinking remnants of the garrisons come reeling out, to surrender. So many dead Japs are lying around that hurried arrangements are made to bury them. And broken to bits, lying all over the ground, are new Tojo type planes and Zeros. The American dead are interred at a military cemetery.
America's new hero, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet, rides into view in a jeep. Accompanying him are Admirals Hoover and Turner, and Generals Holland Smith and Harry Schmidt. Shortly after the Stars and Stripes are placed in position over the Atoll, the electrifying news from Truk comes in, and a fuller significance is given to this marvelous victory in the Marshalls.

U. S. VICTORY AT TRUK
The U.S. Navy makes history as a huge task force assembles to attack the highly publicized "impregnable fortress of Truk." Planes zoom from expansive carrier decks, and before long, Truk is observed, stretched out below like a diagram on a drafting table.
Cocky Jap interceptors bear in for the attack--and they are blown out of the skies, by uncanny machine gun fire, and clouds of rising anti-aircraft fire. Then our planes dive on acres of grounded Jap planes and riddle them to Kingdom Come. They dive on oil tanks and spew lead streams into them, until they burst into flames.
In the harbor, freighters are split in two and destroyers are destroyed, as the craft are zealously strafed and bombed.
Back on a carrier, we watch two damaged U.S. Navy planes land--one comes in on one wheel, and from the other, a seriously wounded pilot is carried away.
Over 200 Jap planes are destroyed, forty vessels are sunk or badly damaged, and Truk is proved vulnerable to superior American equipment and men. What a "sweet day" for the U.S. Navy.

ADVANCE INFORMATION FOR NEWSPAPER PUBLICITY AND EXPLOITATION
INVASION OF SOUTH FRANCE (First actual pictures)
Somewhere in Italy, we watch the huge Allied invasion expedition take shape. Tons of equipment are loaded into endless lines of vessels. With barrage balloons floating above, the tremendous armada sets sail for destination, with Admiral Hewitt, General Patch and Navy Secretary Forrestal poring over plans.
Fleets of air transport planes roar into view, high overhead. We follow them and chance upon one of the most compelling scenes of the war--the air is totally filled with descending chutists. Back at sea, giant navy guns open their bombardment. The enemy replies. Soldiers pour into landing craft and we see some of the battle action on shore. Grenade rifles help clear the way, snipers finish the task. Tank stops are blasted out by tank guns. Enemy dead and prisoners begin to mount. Towns are entered and the demonstrative natives rush out to greet their liberators.
APPROACHING PARIS
Allied bombers and rocket-firing Typhoons destroy enemy communications, while escort planes destroy the few traces of air opposition. Wrecked enemy equipment litters the ground, including dummy wooden artillery. French villages are speedily entered and passed, by a huge stream of tanks, racing forward to yet greater victories.
TRIPLE CHRISTENING
PHILADELPHIA NAVY YARD--In an unprecedented ceremony, Mayor and Mrs. Kelly of Chicago give their city's name to a giant cruiser; Mayor and Mrs. Bowron name another giant cruiser after their home city, Los Angeles. Then Maryland's Senator Tydings watches his wife christen a 27,000 ton aircraft carrier, Antietem, commemorating the civil war battle. Both cruisers had been paid for in war bonds by citizens of Chicago and Los Angeles.
FANCY DIVING
LOS ANGELES, CALIF.--At the Olympic Swimming Stadium Lou Ann McCoskey executes a perfect swam dive, Virginia Hunt descends in one of her specialties, and Sammy Lee flips over 3 and 1/2 times (count them). Envious Stubby Kruger attempts to out-do the champs, but he does the banana peel.

GLOBAL WARFARE
ROMANIA--Enemy film seized by the 15th U. S. Army Air Force shows the tremendous destruction which their planes had wrought upon the invaluable Ploesti oil fields, in their series of raids. The wrecked refineries, oil storage tanks, railway systems and aircraft plants are mute evidence that the raids were highly accurate. And even King Michael can't put out the roaring oil fires which burn continuously by day and by night.
MOROTAI, IN THE HALMAHARAS--After this strategic island, just 300 miles below the Philippines, receives a merciless naval bombardment, U. S. troops from huge Landing Boats, wade ashore in the worst landing beach they have encountered. General MacArthur joins his men ashore, and the air strip is captured.
PELELIE, IN THE PLAUS U.S.--Infantry and Marines are brought ashore by Landing Barges and alligators. They leap ashore and enter into a pitched, flaming battle. So severe is the action that Damon Parer, the newsreel cameraman who made these pictures, was killed while securing them.
SIEGE OF TENGCHUNG--Controlling the juncture of the Ledo Road and Burma Road, this key point was fiercely defended by the Japs against the American-trained Chinese 20th Group Army. Equipped with Bazookas, 75mm. howitzers, heavy caliber mortars and flame throwers, the Chinese exterminate 2,000 Japs and turn in a major victory.

WEST POINT--The Army football squad swamps the Pittsburgh Panther, as a galaxy of all-star backs have a field day at the expense of the Pitt eleven.

U.S. NAVY STRIKES TOKYO
Plowing through tempestuous seas the U. S. Fifth Fleet takes positions several hundred miles off Tokyo . . . the huge carriers of Task Force 58 emerge from the armada . . . and fleets of war planes swoop away, their destination Tokyo.
En route, Jap ships are plastered and sunk by air cannon. Tokyo's docks are pounded. Mammoth Imperial air fields are strafed repeatedly. Intercepting Zeros are destroyed. Gun cameras record power dives on sprawling Jap factories. Rockets speed down into an aluminum factory, and huge fires mount from Tokyo.
Combat loss--Jap 817 planes, 51 vessels--U. S. 9 planes and 4 pilots.
THE CAPTURE OF MT. SURIBACHI
With the costly beach head finally secure on Iwo Jima, the U. S. Marines turn their attention to Mt. Suribachi, the volcano which is covered with Jap guns.
Off shore, U. S. Naval ships pour tons of shells into the mountain. The Marines slowly advance uphill as U. S. dive bombers place sticks of bombs immediately ahead of the Leathernecks. Jap fortifications with narrow entrances and huge, thick walls are reduced with hand grenades. Battered Jap gun emplacements, and scores of slain Japs are passed.
When at last the summit is reached, the Marines enact one of the stirring scenes in American history--the Stars and Stripes are planted on Suribachi -- 750 miles from Tokyo!
THE BANKERS' MILE (Exclusive)
CHICAGO STADIUM -- Gunder Hagg, twice beaten this season by Jim Rafferty--America's Mile King, finishes a good second in this race. Rafferty (a Universal Pictures employer), thereby wins his 8th consecutive indoor mile classic.
MARCH 17th PARADE (Exclusive)
FIFTH AVENUE -- Fifty thousand Irishmen, with steps straight and true, pay tribute to St. Patrick as they parade before one million admiring New Yorkers. Archbishop Spellman, Mayor LaGuardia and James Farley review the procession which is so ably marshalled by Monsignor O'Donnell and the Honorable Commissioner, Patrick Walsh.
