FRIGHTENED NATIVES FLEE IN PANIC BEFORE JAPANESE ADVANCE

HIGHLIGHTS IN 1931'S NEWS
(431)
The parade of events during the past year dealt disastrous blows throughout the world. The major catastrophe of the period was the floods at Hankow, China where upwards of 500,000 persons died in one of the most terrible tragedies that ever visited the Orient.
The most terrifying earthquake disaster the Western Hemisphere has known nearly wiped Managua, Nicaragua, off the face of the globe.
The Bourbon dynasty, successors to the throne of Spain, fell before revolutionary forces, and a monarchical government that had endured since 3,000 B.C. retired from existence as Alfonso XIII abdicated and the nation became a Republic.
Aviation history continued to be made in 1931, with Harold Gatty and Wiley Post setting their plane Betty Mae down on Long Island after circling the globe in a little over 8 days.
Daredevil flying contributed the greatest thrill in the thrilling history of the newsreel screen, with the crash of Lowell Bayles. Screaming through the air at 300 miles an hour, Bayles' plane, twisting and turning, plunged to earth and catapulted the intrepid pilot to his death.
This symposium of the great events of the year would be incomplete without 1931's best laughs -- and a couple of 'em are included that have shaken rafters throughout the civilized world -- and uncivilized, too.
(Numbers indicate approximate scene footage for the benefit of exhibitors requiring same for their presentation schedules)

A PREVIEW TO INVASION
With every American tensely waiting every bit of information on the invasion battles in France, we deem it our public duty to present a pictorial record of how the invasion looked when rehearsed in various training areas abroad.
Supreme Commander Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's historic invasion message is heard as the landing barges plunge through the waves, with swarms of protective planes overhead. Battleships roar. Thousands of commando parachutists float to earth.
We see the Nazi practicing their defense. Huge guns are manned and their machine guns spit their staccato messages of death. Our barges land. Our troops leap ashore, back their way through the barbed wire, and all participants are fit and ready for the actual invasion of Nazi Europe.
AMERICA RECEIVES THE NEWS
Electric signs in New York City and Philadelphia carry the news of the landings in France to millions of city dwellers. The newsrooms of the giant radio networks turn into bee hives. The churches of the nation are jammed with devout parishioners, who are praying from the depth of their hearts for their loved ones in the services. And Gen. George Marshall and Gen. Hap Arnold enter the electrified atmosphere of the White House.
KING AND THE GRAND FLEET
King George VI inspects units of the Grand Fleet which is massed for important duties.
FIRE AND RUINS IN BERLIN
Huge clouds of smoke enshroud large burning areas of Berlin. And other sections of the Nazi capital are shown in utter ruin.
BABY SUBMARINE
British 2-man submarines are seen. The men, dressed in diving suits, sit on a torpedo and operate special releasing mechanism.
474 NEW "GENERALS"
WEST POINT--Graduation exercises are held for the '44 class. Lt. John Eisenhower draws special attention, but the marrying chapel gets very special attention.
DESTRUCTION OF THE LUFTWAFFE
Miraculous pictures of Nazi planes getting blown to bits (in the sky and on the ground), and of other feats of marksmanship by fleets of Allied airmen.
BEAUTIES REAP FLAX
KARNES COUNTY, TEXAS -- Patriotic girls, enlisted in the "Harvest Brigade," operate self-propelled harvesters in local flax fields. The brigade will cut huge swaths through the grain fields, all the way to Canada.
SUDS FOR G.I'S.
The British sailors have their grog--now the G.I. Joes in Italy get their American beer from a Naples brewery. It's a stirring sight to see the boys go for the stuff--they even rise from the earth to get a snootful.

FIRST PICTURES INVASION OF FRANCE
(The greatest co-ordination of arms ever portrayed on any motion picture screen in the world. Every scene made during the greatest victory of Allied power, to date.)
11,000 Allied planes plant their tons of pulverizing bombs on shore installations, strategic roads and bridges--then swoop down to strafe enemy trains, ships and planes
In England, the daredevil paratroopers sail away to their designations and the air-borne troops follow in their gliders. 4,000 ships set sail for the Cherbourg peninsula. The guns of the invasion navy roar into action. Assault boats bounce through the heavy sea . . . shore is reached and the intricate Nazi defences are penetrated.
Nazi prisoners are rounded up, and the many Allied and Nazi wounded are treated and returned to England. Allied heavy equipment rumbles by and the French natives welcome their liberators. Supreme Commander Dwight Eisenhower visits the scene and is welcomed by Generals Montgomery and Bradley.
The air poundings continue, and the mop-up search for snipers is on. The invasion is successful.

THE WAR ON TWO FRONTS
SAIPAN ISLAND--An American task force moves in on this strategic Jap island base within near bomber range of Tokyo's front yard. After four days of naval and air bombardment the Marines take over, suffering losses three times those at Tarawa, but Jap dead are more than ours and they lost 700 planes.
CHERBOURG--Allied troops complete the conquest of the Cherbourg peninsula as reinforcements are flown in by air. 28,000 German prisoners were taken by the allies who either captured or destroyed the greater part of their equipment.
ALLIED WOMEN AT WAR
ANZIO, ITALY--Answering General Mark Clark's call for more WACS in Italy, a fresh contingent arrives at this Italian port and settle into their new life quickly. Canadian CWACS and nurses are on the job, also, aiding doctors and surgeons in front line hospitals while under constant fire.
DEWEY MEETS THE PRESS
CHICAGO, ILL.--Governor Dewey, Republican candidate for President, holds his first conference stressing his approval of the platform and denying he will resign his office as governor. Mrs. Dewey also meets the newspapermen saying she will make no speeches and leave campaigning to her husband.
UNDERWATER TEAMWORK
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- A couple of nifty water nymphs, Martha and Patsy Brown, 18-year-old twins, put on an underwater aquatic act that should make swimming history. With remarkable precision they dip and rise with graceful ease.
