MT. ZION, Miss. -- A 125-mile-an-hour gale cuts a path of destruction a quarter of a mile wide across Simpson and Smith Counties, taking a toll of 5 lives, and injuring 25. Homes are razed; roofs torn from their moorings and flung hundreds of yards away; trees are uprooted; and livestock hurled through space, causing damage estimated at $150,000. Rescuers press through the devastated country, searching for victims and quieting the rising fears of the survivors.
