Dreams of Conquest chronicles the excavation of Fort St. Louis, built in 1685 by the French explorer René-Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle on the banks of Garcitas Creek, which feeds into Matagorda Bay. On this site in 1722, the Spanish, after searching for years to find the remains of the French fort, erected Presidio La Bahia with a stockade wall in the shape of a 16-pointed star. The film follows Texas Historical Commission archaeologists... Dreams of Conquest chronicles the excavation of Fort St. Louis, built in 1685 by the French explorer René-Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle on the banks of Garcitas Creek, which feeds into Matagorda Bay. On this site in 1722, the Spanish, after searching for years to find the remains of the French fort, erected Presidio La Bahia with a stockade wall in the shape of a 16-pointed star. The film follows Texas Historical Commission archaeologists as they unearth and analyze thousands of pottery shreds that lead them to their origins in France and Mexico. Animations and artifacts recreate Fort St. Louis and Presidio La Bahia and help to establish the context in which France and Spain vied for control of North America. Show more Show less

Interweaving stories of Western collectors, Muslim traders, African artists and intellectuals, and the filmmakers themselves, the film focuses on a remarkable art dealer from Niger named Gaba... This extraordinary documentary is one of the most intelligent, perceptive, and engaging films ever made on African culture and art. It explores with irony and humor issues of authenticity, taste, and racial politics in the transnational trade in African art. Interweaving stories of Western collectors, Muslim traders, African artists and intellectuals, and the filmmakers themselves, the film focuses on a remarkable art dealer from Niger named Gabai Barre. It follows him all the way from the rural Ivory Coast to East Hampton, Long Island, where he bargains for a sale. The film shows how (through occasionally hilarious and frequently fantastic tales about the art objects) he adds economic value and changes the "meaning" of what he sells by interpreting and mediating between the cultural values of African producers and Western consumers. For Baare and the other African art traders, the animist "fetishes" they sell are simply commodities, bought and sold like any other. Or so they say. For Western collectors, the best, most "authentic" pieces are considered Art (with a capital A), and their economic value is purely coincidental. Or so they say. "In and Out of Africa" is a classic work that will richly repay viewing in a variety of courses in African studies, cultural anthropology, and art. There is a conspiracy depicted in Rembrandt's "The Night Watch". Greenaway's new documentary film explains it all – the event, the motive, the conspirators, the murderers, the numerous clues and the outcome. And all the evidence is in the painting "The Night Watch", Rembrandt's indictment. Most indictments are conveyed in carefully written texts like Zola's famous "J'accuse" in 1890.

Here the indictment is in paint. This is a CSI with Rembrandt as detective, accuser, prosecutor, and judge. Greenaway examines the 50 clues that lay inside the painting and unveils the murder that has flummoxed art historians since Rembrandt painted it in 1641.

Greenaway also reveals why the fashionable, wealthy parvenu Rembrandt came to lose his fame and fortune in 15 short years and end up a lonely, discredited near-pauper. Rembrandt would surely have been gratified to see that his great group portrait has been recognised in this Greenaway documentary as the "J'accuse" indictment it was always intended to be.
