PATRIOTISM AND NEED COAX FLOOD OF GOLD FROM HIDING PLACES
(94)
LONDON, England -- With Britain off the gold standard, bullion must be shipped to countries holding the pound sterling to support her foreign exchange. The situation has resulted in a real "rush" to Bond Street jewelry shops where rich and poor, alike, dispose of their hoarded precious metal. Many royal gems have been reported sold by impoverished nobles, so the settings can be melted down and made negotiable. "Sterling patriots" are denying the profit, with the government netting 8-shillings in exchange for the silver notes. The movement is fast increasing the nation's gold reserve, one of the most inspiring demonstrations of patriotism in modern economic history.
