Born in 1957, Louisiana guitarist David Doucet has been a cardinal member of the Beausoleil band for more than three decades along with his fiddling big brother Michael Doucet. The first album to appear under David's name came together in January 1990 in collaboration with several fine country and bluegrass musicians including members of Beausoleil. Near the end of January 1999 David Doucet recorded 1957: Solo Cajun Guitar, a beautiful album of acoustic guitar solos that convey the intimacy of a leisurely breakfast with an old friend. At times he sings softly in the Cajun patois while performing modest miracles in the manner of Doc Watson, Guy Van Duser, Clarence White, Roger Mason and Richard Fontenot. This exceptionally fine music has therapeutic qualities and may be administered as a sort of nerve tonic. Choice cuts are the "Lake Arthur Stomp," the "Cajun Waltz," the "Port Arthur Waltz," "Bayou Sorrel" and the "Midland Two-Step." ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide

Kristjan Järvi's 18-piece Absolute Ensemble brings irreverence and rhythmic mettle to the world of contemporary classical and third stream music. This is the group's fourth release, and it features works by six composers -- the last of which is Jimi Hendrix, whose "Purple Haze" is given a warped reworking by Daniel Schnyder. (In the liners, Hendrix's tremolo bar is hilariously described by Schnyder as a "joy slide stick tool.") Schnyder's own "subZERO," a three-movement concerto for bass trombone featuring David Taylor, is one of the disc's centerpieces, a marvelous showcase for an instrument seldom pushed to the foreground. The late Lepo Sumera's relatively lengthy "Play for 10," with its maddening staccato repetitions and stark mood swings, is another major highlight. Denman Maroney is unaccompanied on his own "Par 3," an astonishing work for prepared piano; he returns to wreak inspired havoc on "Purple Haze" as well. Pianist Matt Herskowitz contributes "Serial Blues," an energetic, improv-heavy jazz/funk vehicle that highlights his own virtuosity, as well as that of the ensemble's rhythm section (drummer/percussionists David Rozenblatt and Pablo Rieppi, bassist Mat Fieldes). Slap-bass funk and sectional counterpoint collide on Charles Coleman's "Absolution," while a sneakier sort of percussive engine propels the opening "Dance Machine." Riotously complex, thoughtful, and often uplifting, the music defies categorization even as it upholds the rigors of classical orchestration. ~ David R. Adler, All Music Guide

Acoustics was released in 1979, some two years after Tony Rice's involvement with the David Grisman Quintet's debut album. Like the Grisman recording, Acoustics proved to be a groundbreaking album for progressive bluegrass musicians. The music on Acoustics is all instrumental and features an incredible group of musicians including Sam Bush, Richard Greene, Mike Marshall, Todd Phillips, and, on one cut, David Grisman. Perhaps the first thing a listener will notice is that an instrumental like "Swing 51" has very little to do with bluegrass. The essence of "Swing 51" is -- as the title suggests -- swing jazz. This is a romantic music, inspired by the spirit of Stephane Grapelli and Django Reinhardt and perfectly suited for acoustic instruments. "Blues for Paradise" is a lovely melody, set in motion by Rice's subtle flat-picking and brought to full beauty by Sam Bush's violin. Bush and Greene share violin duties on Acoustics, proving especially apt at defining melodies and setting the mood. The highlight of this disc is the quick paced "So Much," a piece bursting with vitality. "So Much" was written by Rice and, like the other songs on Acoustics, features open structures with fascinating chord progressions. Emphasis throughout this album is placed on instrumental dexterity, with each musician given the chance to build and develop each lead at length. The musicians also provide unadorned accompaniment, leaving lots of quiet space around the lead player. The glue holding this project together is Rice, who also played a primary role in the original David Grisman Quintet. On this album Rice expands the role of the guitar, building each lead faultlessly through intricate succession. Acoustics gives notice that acoustic musicians, like jazz musicians, possess the skills required to create spontaneous and vital music. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., All Music Guide
