The vote was over, and a decision had been made: Claudio Abbado was the new chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker. So it was in 1989, when – for the first time – the orchestra itself decided who was to be its leader. The result was a surprise for the music world – and also for Abbado himself. This documentary from 1990 traces the first year of the new chief conductor in Berlin, the special atmosphere of new beginnings and the diverse expectations the musicians had of Herbert von Karajan’s successor. Other than this, many insights are provided into the first artistic projects of the new man at the helm, starting with the rehearsals for Mahler’s First Symphony with which he ushered in his tenure in December 1989. We are also taken behind the scenes to see among other things Abbado’s first visit to Karajan’s room – which was now to be his – and to a first birthday party with the musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Of course, the members of the orchestra have their say, and tell of their hopes and what they expected of their new boss. Even today, these impressions convey the special magic that was in the air at that time.

This documentary, completed in the bicentenary of the birth of Liszt (1811-1886), attempts to recount the extraordinary, highly eventful life of the great Hungarian composer, with particular emphasis on his relation with Italy and with Italian art and culture. Although the whole of his life is covered, special attention is given to his first visit to Italy (1837-39), when Liszt conceived a great part of his most important compositions: the two Concertos for piano and orchestra, the Totentanz, theTranscendental Studies, the Dante Sonata. Furthermore, it was in Italy that Liszt invented the recital, and it was Italy that marked the beginning of his grand international tour that was to transform him into the first “rock-star” ante litteram. Itwas in those years that he experienced his first important sentimental relationship: with Marie d’Agoult, the mother of his three children, who accompanied him during his artistic pilgrimages, documenting them in a rich and intense diary. The composer’s life is narrated through the reading of original letters and diaries written by Liszt and Marie d’Agoult, accompanied by reconstructed scenes of the period that re-evoke their stays on Lake Como, in Milan, Pisa, San Rossore and Rome – the inspirational sources that fired Liszt’s creative instinct: to see Italy through the eyes of Liszt.

This documentary offers a careful use of the epistolary of the “protagonist”, entrusting to letters written and received by Chopin the task of explaining the narrative junctures of his life. This documentary offers a careful use of the epistolary of the “protagonist”, entrusting to letters written and received by Chopin the task of explaining the narrative junctures of his life. The writings are interpreted by Fabrizio Bentivoglio and Margherita Buy (who provides the voice for George Sand, the French writer with whom Chopin had a relationship). Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) was born in Zelazowa Wola, near Warsaw, in a setting far from the limelight of the great musical tradition, but at the same time he absorbs the winds that blow in from that same tradition. His education is the fruit of Polish culture and cannot be separated from that, but he also feels the influence of the three main cultures of the time: Italian, Austro-Germanand French. This documentary describes the places that provided the basis for the young composer’s imagination, from the capital Warsaw to rural Poland, where Chopin spends part of his childhood and is formed as a man and a musician, on to Paris, theatre of the second half of the musician’s life. The film evokes the almost Gogolian atmosphere of the Polish countryside: Zelazowa Wola, Szafarnia, Torun are described through documentary footage that restores the suggestiveness, which is still alive today, of the folklore Chopin was so attached to. Without forgetting, naturally, Warsaw, with the world’s most important piano competition, preserves the memory of one of the most important characters of European culture.

Phil Grabsky brings us the music and life story of Fryderyk Chopin, considered one of the greatest composers of all time. Chopin's grave in Paris remains a place of pilgrimage and his music continues to sell out concert halls worldwide - but who exactly was this astonishing man? He was terrified of public performance; he fled his Polish homeland for Paris never to return; took up with the most notorious transvestite in France and, despite a life of ill-health, wrote some of the deepest and most powerful music ever written? How exactly did a young Polish boy rise to such heady heights? For four years, Phil Grabsky has travelled the globe in his quest to lay bare the life and music of Chopin. By talking to acclaimed musical historians such as Jeremy Siepmann and bringing to the screen performances by such esteemed musicians as Leif Ove Andsnes, Daniel Barenboim, Ronald Brautigam, Kevin Kenner and Lars Vogt he hopes to answer those questions. Renowned stage and screen star Juliet Stevenson provides narration. David Dawson brings life to the letters of Chopin himself.
