Since 1972 the 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker have been a prominent institution in international musical life …Since 1972 the 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker have been a prominent institution in international musical life. Whether they’re playing classical music, jazz, tango or avant-garde, listeners around the world are invariably fascinated by the wide range of the unique and intoxicating timbres that these twelve cellos can produce. Their mixture of seriousness and humor, of depth and lightness, appeals to audiences of all ages. Among the contemporary composers who have written works especially for the “12” are Boris Blacher, Jean Françaix, Iannis Xenakis, Arvo Pärt, and Tan Dun. The documentary by Enrique Sánchez Lansch portrays the ensemble of the 12 Cellists, its history and its individual members.

Evelyn Glennie is the world's most in-demand percussion soloist, dazzling audiences worldwide with her musicality, creativity and charismatic energy. She was the first percussionist ever to sustain a full-time solo career on her instruments – an accomplishment even more astonishing as her hearing is significantly impaired leaving her to rely more on vibrations rather than acoustics. The phenomenally talented musician gives more than 100 critically acclaimed performances a year and has commissioned over 100 works for solo percussion. Evelyn Glennie regularly collaborates with leading musicians working in various musical styles and has recorded 20 albums, two of which have won Grammy Awards. In this documentary, recorded live at the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg in 2004, she presents some of her greatest hits in a show of thrilling music and light design, playing snare drum, marimba and vibraphone. The various surprising sounds she creates and her lively performance are wonderfully captured on this state-of-the-art recording.

This documentary, completed in the bicentenary of the birth of Liszt (1811-1886), attempts to recount the extraordinary, highly eventful life of the great Hungarian composer, with particular emphasis on his relation with Italy and with Italian art and culture. Although the whole of his life is covered, special attention is given to his first visit to Italy (1837-39), when Liszt conceived a great part of his most important compositions: the two Concertos for piano and orchestra, the Totentanz, theTranscendental Studies, the Dante Sonata. Furthermore, it was in Italy that Liszt invented the recital, and it was Italy that marked the beginning of his grand international tour that was to transform him into the first “rock-star” ante litteram. Itwas in those years that he experienced his first important sentimental relationship: with Marie d’Agoult, the mother of his three children, who accompanied him during his artistic pilgrimages, documenting them in a rich and intense diary. The composer’s life is narrated through the reading of original letters and diaries written by Liszt and Marie d’Agoult, accompanied by reconstructed scenes of the period that re-evoke their stays on Lake Como, in Milan, Pisa, San Rossore and Rome – the inspirational sources that fired Liszt’s creative instinct: to see Italy through the eyes of Liszt.
