Here the very air resonates with warm Latin rhythms and the clack of castanets, while all opera lovers know that its dark side streets are throbbing with passion and violence. Lesley discovers the mysteries of the flamenco as she learns this most seductive of dances, and finds Moorish music in the bars and in the city, where Rossini’s set his popular opera, The Barber Of Seville. Flamenco master and heart-throb Joaquin Cortes shows off his sensual style, and
there is music from Verdi’s Il Trovatore, Sorozabal’s La Taberna Del Puerto and, of course, Bizet’s Carmen. The exciting Russian violinist Maxim Vengerov is also among the guest stars.

Mirella Freni is one of the most remarkable soprano singers in the world of opera. She has been winning over audiences for half a century with her ever fresh and youthful vocals and with a voice quality which remains undiminished. The portrait shows Mirella Freni during masterclasses in her hometown of Modena; in an extended interview, filmed in the Teatro Comunale, Freni speaks about her extraordinary career. One of her first performances with Luciano Pavarotti in Puccini’s 'La Boheme' is shown. Interviews with colleagues and friends such as famous tenor Placido Domingo and conductor Herbert von Karajan as well as Freni’s greatest stage performances, private pictures and rare material from the archive complete the portrait. 'I am really touched by this movie. I feel honoured by its sensitive presentation of my life, my career, my work as a teacher and my feelings about all these aspects.' Mirella Freni

Her story is so unusual, her gift so unexplainable and the sudden and tragic end to it so beyond understanding that the world had to invent its own myths and then, as the years went by, to embellish them. In the process the stories have projected an image of her character that bears less and less resemblance to the real person – who so caught the public imagination and who meant so much to so many people. Who was the real Jacqueline du Pré?
