Airelle Besson is an accomplished musician who has studied at the conservatory (not only trumpet, but also violin and harmony) and performed in large ensembles (Orchestre National de Jazz, Le Sacre du Tympan). She has established herself on the French jazz scene for the beauty of her trumpet sound as well as for the quality of her compositions.
Her quartet wasn’t assembled in a hurry; she appreciates drummer Fabrice Moreau's colorist approach and pianist Benjamin Moussay's open-mindedness. If she chose the Swedish Isabelle Sörling, it’s because this singer with a crystal-clear voice has an incredible range and she sees herself above all as an instrumentalist who blends into the sound mass (there's a beautifully modern scat in "Candy Parties").
The shared preliminary thinking was not to prescribe anything. This is what the listener perceives; it’s all in the suggestion. Could it be a new romanticism that's more Nordic than Latin?

Bojan Z values the percussive dimension while Baptiste Trotignon delivers different, stranger sounds, familiar in contemporary music, by strumming the strings. All the tones are visited, in long exchanges without any untimely demonstration of superlative technique in order to avoid any perverse battle of egos. Everything flows seamlessly in this beautifully crafted repertoire. They move happily from each other’s personal compositions ("TNT,""Awake") to a sparkling interpretation of "Lennie's Pennies" (far removed from the intellectualism usually attributed to Lennie Tristano) to "Retrato Em Preto E Branco," one of Tom Jobim's most beautiful songs, to an emotional and delicate version of "Body & Soul." You should see the smile on the faces of Stochelo Rosenberg, Romane and Marc Lebevillon when they kick off this concert in homage to Django Reinhardt on the stage of the Europa Jazz Festival in 2011. It’s proof positive that the godfather of gypsy jazz has lost none of his aura and that his music continues to inspire joy, melancholy and the spirit of resistance, even though more than 60 years have passed since his death.
Joined by Angelo Debarre and Christophe Cavero, these musicians are among the most famous successors to the guitarist with the burnt hand, an all-star band, Gypsy by adoption, that knows his repertoire inside and out and that continues to transmit its timeless beauty. There’s a little thing that bothers me when it comes to gypsy jazz, and it’s that people very often don’t lead it back to jazz. They talk about ethnic music and make an association with Tzigane music, which has absolutely nothing to do with it, explains Romane, who fell under its spell at a very early age, just like his onstage companions. Their frenzied strings and learned voices guide us throughout this moving film, a veritable ode to the composer of Minor Swing and Nuages. We’re all children of Django.

As if to illustrate the concert given by the Polish keyboardist Hania Rani allegorically, the final credits of the program close with images of an escalator whose steps continue moving hypnotically in the silence. It is true that the artist invites us on a kind of introspective trip, like a long calm river with some dark moments but where an insistent and iterative music permeates melancholic, simple, and almost childish melodies. In the music’s watermark, we can hear references drawn from Chopin but also from Philip Glass or from the Icelandic artist Jóhann Jóhannsson, and even from Agnes Obel. An almost pantheistic music is imposed, inspired by Nordic rather than Mediterranean nature; where beauty is born from the contrast between the warmth of acoustics and the coldness of electronics. Born in 1990, Hania Rani, whose real name is Hanna Raniszewska, has already won several prizes in her native country both as a performer and as a composer in the world of neo-classical music. In a beautiful hall of the Faculty of Sciences at La Sorbonne, close to the public, surrounded by keyboards (grand piano, upright piano, electronic instruments,) she delivers subtle music, with rhythmic jumps and variations on the sounds and their pitch. Hania Rani also occasionally mixes electronic sounds with her folk-like vocalizations (with echo chamber). Sheets of sound envelop us while mesmerizing clicks question us. It’s hard to categorize Jorge Rossy, who during the course of his career has starred as a drummer, then experimented with trumpet and later focused on the piano. He veered his expression into another direction in 2018 when he released the album Beyond Sunday performed by the Jorge Rossy Vibes Quartet that showcased him as a vibraphone band leader. While throughout the ‘90s he helped to redefine the art of the traditional jazz trio especially in the renowned band led by Brad Mehldau, the Barcelona-based Rossy set off to dedicate himself to not be boxed in by expectations. Enter Beyond Sunday that proved to be another, well-conceived surprise. By playing the vibraphone, Rossy experienced the percussive elements of drumming with the melodic voicing of the piano. He’s toured his quintet frequently throughout Europe, including Zurich, Switzerland where he set up shop at Jazz Club Moods for two hour long sets with tasteful tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, talented Barcelona neighbor Jaume Llombart on guitar, and a stellar rhythm team comprised of acoustic bassist Doug Weiss and veteran drummer Billy Hart (who for the tour had substituted the beat-keeping duties for Al Foster who appeared on the album). At these sets, the subtle musical interplay produced luminous, nuanced performances of many Rossy originals including "Post-Catholic Waltz", "Maybe Tuesday" and "Bolero". While Rossy cheerfully led the band, he didn’t play the role of vibes virtuoso, relying instead on setting the rhythmic architecture, then coming in for short two-mallet solos and grace notes.
