Addict
performed by Kalotone (Magnatune, 2011), 56 mins
Addict by Kalotone shapes a new twist on Drum & Bass, Glitch, and
Dubstep. Dark ambience meet heavy beats in this chopped up mix of
genres. There's an eerie but energetic and experimental mood throughout
the album, perhaps not for the faint hearted, but, if your curiosity is
overpowering it's worth the risk.

The best selling of all DJ Cary's compilations, Eastern Grooves has a friendly, mid-tempo groove throughout much of the album, making it ideal for work and after-work alike. Eastern influences are abundant, of course, and the overall sensibility here is a modern, cosmopolitan one interwoven with more timeless sounding material such as "Kereshme" by Stellamara. The subtle beats return with "Mirrored Image" by Cargo Cult?an irresistable track by Cargo Cult. Next comes the tabla seduction of "Dance of the Aisles" and the understated poetics of "Arabesque" by Hans Christian. We especially like the atmospheric "Waddi Jah" by Rapoon, which blends what sounds like 1920's Indian radio broadcasts with fizzy, floaty ambient loops.

A whip-smart blend of instrumental electronic, jazz, dub, and funk influences, best-seller The Introduction has a great buzzy feeling to it. Ulf Ivarsson teams up with some of the most interesting players on the contemporary Swedish music scene: keyboardist Per Wiberg (Opeth, Spiritual Beggars), trumpet player Goran Kajfes {Sting, Oddjob, Nacka Forum, Blacknuss Allstars), cellist Raymond King (Chris Bailey, Page, Plant), and guitarist George Nakas (Safri Duo, Embryo Sthlm). The fantastic "Blue Lights" opens the album; Kajfes shows us how a trumpet line that might have been mournful in another track can sound deeply urbane with some effervescent rhythms set behind it. "Direction Dub" is a great track too?mellow and atmospheric but with that undercurrent of buzz that runs throughout the album. "Saturn Blues" is another highlight. It gives us great bluesy swaths of Kajfes' horn playing swirled into Ivarsson's stirred up beats and vibraphone by Wiberg.
