An ephemeral but irresistible trend, rocksteady inevitably seduces with its character, richly embellished by the gems of American soul. A hinge between the danceable hymns of ska and the imperial offbeats of reggae, this genre naturally values melodies but was also one of the first island forms to be exported, via the productions of Duke Reid and the Trojan label. Recorded in 1992, the present musical reunion brings this brilliant story back to center stage. The biggest stars of the genre are invited, such as Ken Boothe and his “Say You,” and even the Melodians with the harmonious “Sweet Sensation.” Leader of the Paragons in the second part of the sixties, John Holt revisits "Wear You To The Ball," one of the hits of the Jamaican vocal trio, before this composition is revisited by the master U-Roy. And the Techniques confirm the musical filiation mentioned above, thanks to a sumptuous adaptation of "Minstrel And Queen" by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions. Presented by the charismatic Dennis Brown, this singing tour reveals above all a style with an assumed modernity as evidenced in "Feel Like Jumping," a title recorded by Marcia Griffiths just before her career with Bob Marley. Gifted with a velvet voice, Dennis Brown is a monument of Jamrock. First appearing in Sir Coxsone’s circle with the beautiful "No Man Is An Island," the artist released, during the 70s, several classics including "Cassandra," "Wolf & Leopards," as well as a hit version of "Money In MyPocket.” Renowned for his concerts (we remember an incandescent performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival), the man nicknamed The Crowned Prince of Reggae is captured here during a tour of the legendary Reggae Sunsplash Festival. Surrounded by a solid band including a set of backup singers and a brass section, Dennis Brown quickly gets into the groove with the swaying "Sitting And Watching," raises the bar with the vehement "Hypocrite," before advocating non-violence in dancehall mode with the iconic "Stop Your Fighting." Shadowed by a bass-drum line, he does not forget the Rasta mystique and the related Afrocentric message. The message is perceptible with the classic "Promised Land," a secular theme in which the singer invokes Addis Ababa, the epicenter of reggae preaching, but also Shashamane, an unknown Ethiopian territory today populated by the Caribbean followers of Haile Selassie. … Vincent Caffiaux

Sometimes we come across unexpected, if not incongruous, encounters that turn out to be amazing, disturbing and inventive. This concert is a perfect example of this phenomenon. We see Norwegian musicians Nils Petter Molvær and Eivind Aarset fusing jazz, rock and ambient music with a World-class Jamaican rhythm section composed of drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare – both of whom shaped the "Rub A Dub Style" and hundreds of Reggae music hits since the ‘80s. This meeting was initiated by Robbie Shakespeare, who admits that he has always had a fascination with the imagination of the trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær. And whilst this clash between aesthetically distant musical worlds is already enough of a gamble, it pays off – the project is delivered with total adhesion, eventually finding its discographic form through the album *Nordub* in 2018. As if giving us a clue or a unique entry point, during the performance Robbie sings a few verses from The Abbyssinians: "The book of life; there is a land far from away". With these musicians, that book of life opens onto a dreamlike country where the floating atmosphere of Norwegian Nu jazz transcends the 'riddims' of Jamaica, where melancholic reveries are anchored in an earthy dimension carried by the dry drumming. Filmed by Tom Mitchell in August 1997 at the Santa Monica Pier, the singer acknowledges a lineage with southern soul and names like Wilson Pickett and Eddie Floyd. A fact perceptible with “Pomps And Pride,” a classic from his 70s discography; through “Monkey Man,” the rude anthem taken up more than forty years ago by Jerry Dammers and the classy Specials; and thanks to the aptly named “Funky Kingston,” a devilishly groovy stomper in which Toots imposes a volcanic tone to say the least… Illustrated by colorful playing and introductions in the strict American liturgical tradition, this open-air concert of one hour recalls the essential place occupied by the stage in the career of the late performer. An obvious phenomenon when listening to the autobiographical “54-46, That's My Number,” a track acclaimed at the end of the 60s by the British public and more precisely by the aficionados of the Pyramid catalog: let's dance!
