Born in Scotland in 1947, Martin Walker has made a literary memorial to his adopted home, the French region of Périgord. His successful crime novels about the sympathetic village policeman "Bruno" play in this region and treat beside the criminal cases the rich history and the culinary specialties of the Périgord. The graduate historian and economist worked for 25 years as a journalist and foreign correspondent for the British newspaper "The Guardian". He has authored numerous nonfiction books, including on the Cold War, perestroika, Mikhail Gorbachev and Bill Clinton. To this day, he also manages a "think tank" in Washington, which analyzes trends in the global economy for major business enterprises and politicians. Martin Walker presents in this documentary his favorite places and the historically most important sites of Périgord.

In a British-ruled India, a subedar, an officer of the Indian Army, is sent to collect taxes in a village. Riding into the village, the subedar chances upon Sonbai, a beautiful, married woman. Abusing his power as an officer, he demands that Sonbai sleeps with him while her husband is away. To his surprise, Sonbai slaps him in full view of his soldiers before running off. Enraged and embarrassed, the subedar orders his soldiers to capture Sonbai. However, Sonbai escapes to the spice factory, where the elderly watchman locks the soldiers out to protect her. The town leader is then commanded to deliver Sonbai to the subedar and after some deliberation, the patriarchal village decides to sacrifice Sonbai. As the spice factory comes under attack, Sonbai and the female factory workers finally decide to stand up for themselves. Knight. Seeking to document the little-known musics of the region, Knight packed a notebook, movie and still cameras, and a tape recorder onto his motorcycle and sought out the musicians in their villages. The results are presented in these scenes: twel...
The forested hills and valleys of the eastern Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, India attracted Rudyard Kipling a century ago, and more recently, for different reasons, ethnomusicologist Roderic C. Knight. Seeking to document the little-known musics of the region, Knight packed a notebook, movie and still cameras, and a tape recorder onto his motorcycle and sought out the musicians in their villages. The results are presented in these scenes: twelve musical performances and numerous scenes from daily life in 1982. At the time, Super 8 sound movie film was the medium of choice; the digital mini-cam was far in the future. These films, converted to video and digitally edited with the able assistance of Elio Trabal (Oberlin College 2004), capture events of two types: rural music that is today as isolated as it was then, and urban festive music that is as vibrant and current today as it was when filmed.

A-long comes from a long line of dragon dancers and is driven to prove his own worth. A pride to their town of Longphozai, his family has always observed cultural traditions and respected the village leaders -- unlike A-long's childhood sweetheart Fengmei.
